The Sikarians are well known in some regions of the Delta Quadrant
for their hospitality. Physically they resemble humans with no outwardly
distinguishing characteristics. Encountered by USS Voyager in 2371, the
Sikarians were found to be a well-traveled and cultured people who placed
great importance in the telling of stories. Voyager officers also discovered
that the Sikarians possessed a technology, the spatial projector, that
enabled them to travel distances up to 40,000 light years instantaneously.
When Voyager requested the use of this technology to shorten their trip
home to the Alpha Quadrant, the Sikarians refused because of strict laws
which did not allow them to share their technology in order to prevent
its possible misuse by others.
USS Voyager visited Sikaris in 2371 after being invited their by Magistrate
Gath Labin, who had become aware of Voyager's plight. Encouraged by Gath,
Captain Janeway granted shore leave to her crew, who soon discovered the
Sikarians' generous and pleasant nature. Gath later demanded that Voyager
leave orbit of Sikaris after having refused to allow Voyager to use a technology
that would have transported Voyager 40,000 light years towards their destination
in the Alpha Quadrant. Later, after this advanced spatial trajector technology
was acquired by some of Voyager's officers, it was discovered that the
trajector used a 20 kilometer thick layer of tetrahedral quartz in Sikaris'
mantle to magnify and focus the trajector field. Knowing that they could
not use the stolen trajector matrix anywhere but on or in orbit of Sikaris,
the officers unsuccessfully tried to implement the matrix, which proved
incompatible with Federation technology. (Sikaris is 40,000 light years
from Alastria, a planet visited by Ensign Harry Kim during his shore leave.
It was Ensign Kim that brought the information about the spacial trajector
to Captain Janeway's attention.).
