This planet was the site of a Kohl settlement that was regarded as
a major trading post. In 2353 major solar flare activity rapidly changed
the climate of the planet and resulted in magnetic storms, high levels
of radiation and a glacial freeze. Atmospheric conditions prevented evacuation
of the settlement's 400,000 population and forced those that could to be
placed within hibernation pods programmed to revive the occupants in 15
years when the biosphere should be habitable again. The pods, located 2.3
kilometers below the surface, were designed such that the occupants minds
were kept active in a virtual reality environment that had also been programmed
to display atmospheric conditions at regular intervals. In time the fears
of the survivors manifested themselves in the form of a clown which terrorized
those in the system and prevented them from reviving themselves.
In 2372 USS Voyager discovered this planet and noted that the glaciers
were retreating and the biosphere recovering. Voyager found evidence of
high technology, including communication satellites in orbit, but no signs
of life. After being hailed by a recording made by settlement planner Viorsa
which indicated that the survivors should have revived themselves in 2368,
Voyager discovered lifesigns below the surface and beamed aboard five hibernation
pods. Of the three who were still alive in the pods only two were eventually
recovered after Voyager was able to defeat the clown and disable its program.
Although Viorsa had been among the three alive when Voyager found the pods,
he was later killed by the clown during one of Voyager's first attempts
to thwart his program.
