This race was first encountered by USS Voyager in 2372 when an away team was sent to the surface of their planet in order to secure a material needed for Voyager's warp engines.
USS Voyager visited this planet in 2372 in search of a source of tellerium, a substance needed to maintain the ship's warp core. Voyager hid behind one of the planet's moons while an away team was sent to the surface to acquire the tellerium in a city named Alsaurian. The away team—Captain Janeway, Lieutenant Tuvok, Lieutenant Torres and Neelix—were dressed in civilian clothes in order to avoid detection by the Mokra Order, a strict organization that ruled the planet without mercy. Although Neelix was able to return to Voyager with the tellerium, the rest of the away team was believed to have been captured by the Mokra, who were uncooperative when Voyager made inquiries about their missing crewmembers. Third Magistrate Augris had failed to inform Commander Chakotay that Tuvok and Torres were imprisoned and that a search for Janeway was in progress. Janeway had been taken in by a local named Caylem who believed that she was his deceased daughter and wished her help in rescuing his wife, who had actually been dead for 12 years, from the prison. When Voyager later surmised that the away team was being held at the Alsaurian prison they conducted scans which revealed the prison to be surrounded by metaphasic shields and the detention level to be subterranean and surrounded by rock too dense to allow transporter operation. Attempts by Voyager to penetrate the prison shield in order to send a transporter beam through were immediately detected by the Mokra and Voyager was threatened and ordered to leave Mokra space in two minutes. By this time Janeway had managed to make her way into the prison and disrupt the prison's shield and forcefield systems. Voyager detected this disruption and used the cover of an electrical storm over the planet's northern magnetic pole to confuse the Mokra sensors and avoid weapons fire being launched at the ship. When a rescue team was finally transported into the prison Janeway, Tuvok and Torres were discovered and safely returned to Voyager. Before the arrival of the rescue team Magistrate Augris had been killed by Caylem, who was then fatally injured by one of the Mokra soldiers.
