Mabon

*Southern Hemisphere Date: March 21st
*Northern Hemisphere Date: September 23rd

*Origins: Pronounced May-bon, Mabon is the second in the trilogy of harvest festivals, and marks the completion of the grain harvest begun during Lammas. This lesser Sabbat occurs at the Fall Equinox (somewhere between September 20th and 23rd) Mabon is a Welsh name meaning "great son," and refers to the Son of the Great Mother; The Son of Light. Other names for the Sabbat are Wine Harvest, Feast of Avalon.

Once again we find ourselves in the time of balance. It is a time when night and day are equal in length again and when the harvest is nearing completion. The God nears his death and the Goddess prepares for his rebirth. The bounty of the harvest is celebrated in wine festivals, knowing that soon Winter will bring uncertainty.

This is an appropriate time for rededication to the Craft, and initiation ceremonies are common at Mabon. Now is the time to give thanks, to meditate, to examine your achievemnts and simply a time to switch off, and take a break. Mabon is the time to honor the Ancient Ones and the Spirit World.

Herbs appropriate to the Mabon Sabbat include grapes, wine, vines, garland, gourds, pine cones, acorns, wheat, dried leaves, burial cairns, rattles, Indian corn, Sun wheels, and/or horns of plenty.
