MOONSET WEYR PERSONA GUIDE (revised 3/1/1997) -------------------------- "The World of Pern is copyrighted by Anne McCaffrey (c)l967." "The Dragonriders of Pern (r) is a registered trademark." Welcome ------- Welcome to MoonSet Weyr, a fan club of Anne McCaffrey's Pern. We are a group of McCaffrey fans dedicated to enjoying this enchanting world of empathic dragons, engaging people, and their struggle against Thread for survival. Here you will find out who we are, what we do in this club, and how you can join in on the fun! Pern Fandom ----------- "Pern Fandom" is a term used to describe a large number of worldwide fans of Anne McCaffrey's DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN series and who have formed their own clubs. The clubs are named for various organizations from the Pern series (like Weyrs, Holds, and Halls). Each club is different in aspect of rules and premise, but most provide their membership with a periodic publication of stories, artwork, poetry, and other Pern-related material, all created and enjoyed by that group. **Each group is autonomous of the others, just like in the books, and has its own set of rules and standards.** The rules for MoonSet Weyr are included here; also included is a persona-writing guide and persona sheet to help you create your Pernese self. While it's not necessary to create a persona to be in a Pern Fandom group, it is usually the basis for your participation in the stories and other activities in MoonSet Weyr. How many personas you create is up to your imagination! MoonSet Leadership Team ------------ Weyrwoman Jerita (Debbe King) [Selest MS@aol.com] Weyrwoman Second Aylinn (Kelly Murphy)[Aylinn MS@aol.com] Weyrlingmaster K'las (Leanna Parrack)[Weyrling@aol.com] Retired Weyrwoman Quinta [Joan Symons)[quinta@magick.net] MoonSet Weyr ------------ MoonSet Weyr takes place, time-wise, in the 12th Pass of the Red Star. That's about 750 Turns after the events that took place in the original DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN trilogy. A lot has changed since those events: the Southern Continent is sparsely inhabited and has many abandoned Weyrs due to a plague that decimated the continent. The Northern Weyrs are still there, but the South is nearly as low on people as before AIVAS was discovered. From a Fannish History standpoint, many of the events in ALL THE WEYRS OF PERN didn't happen. Landing is still there, and they found many of the Ancients artifacts, but sadly, AIVAS didn't work. That's to keep Anne's Pern and the world we play in comfortably (and legally) separate. Fictionally, MoonSet Weyr is located near the old Cove Hold and Ancient's Plateau and the Two-faced Mountain of The White Dragon. A map of the 12th Pass, including territories and Holds, is available online or on our Web page. (http://members.aol.com/nuriams/moonset/moonset.html) The Weyr is named MoonSet because while the moon is setting, this Weyr is the place where the region is most illuminated by Belior's light (one of Pern's two moons). Thus the name MoonSet Weyr. **Major Holds in MoonSet's territory so far: MoonSet Hold: Lord Jadin Purple Rock Hold: Lord Tyrell **Minor Holds and Cotholds include Seafire Hold, Windfoam Hold, Limerick Cothold, Spray Point Hold, Farm Cothold, Abundance Cothold, Saythwind Hold, Fullskins Hold. (Most of these Holds are held by Non-persona characters; if you're interested in holding MoonSet territory please email Selest MS@aol.com) How do you "play" Pern? ----------------------- It's simple. You decide first on what kind of persona you'd like to have. That persona can be a dragonrider, a holder, a crafter, or any type of character that appeared in Anne's books on Pern. If you want to be a crafter, just remember that a crafter has to spend a time as an apprentice at one of the major crafthalls, then spend a lot of time as a journeyman. Remember: dragons take a lot of time and energy. You can't be both a full-time craftsman and a dragonrider at the same time. Any craft your persona was involved in before Impression will become not much more than a hobby after Impression. If you want to stand out, be a smithcrafter, or even a woodcrafter. Healing and Harpering are the two most popular crafts, so you might want to see if there's a place for you before you get your heart set on one of those. If you wish to become a Holder in MoonSet territory, you'll need to check on that with Weyrwoman Jerita, at Selest MS@aol.com. Being a Lord Holder is a lot of work. You can't be both a Holder and a dragonrider at the same time. Some of the major holds in MoonSet territory are already staffed with Lord (or Lady) Holders, and that changes from time to time due to member fluctuation. Also, many of the minor holds in MoonSet territory need holders. If it's a dragonrider you desire, then you also have to come up with a name and personality for your dragon. E-mail Weyrwoman Jerita at Selest MS@aol.com for a hatch date. Generally speaking, we have blues, greens, and browns available immediately. Bronzes and golds are more scarce, and usually we have a waiting list for folks who want one of either color. Gold dragons are currently unavailable. If you can't get the color you want, you can either wait for it (fictionally, you didn't Impress this time, but you might at the next Hatching), or choose another color dragon. Color slots open up unexpectedly, due to change in Weyr size and fluctuations in membership. Bronze and gold dragons, as well as major club positions such as Weyrhealer, Weyrharper, Lord/Lady Holder, Master crafter etc., are usually rewarded to the members who contribute most to the club. Being a new Weyr, we are still looking for people to play many of these positions, so work, contribute to the club in some way, and it could be yours! If you need help creating a persona, or just want to find out what's going on, drop a note to the address below or contact Weyrwoman Jerita [Screen Name: Selest MS] through America Online (from the Internet, add @aol.com to screenname). When you're finished creating your alter-ego, email it to screen name Selest MS@aol.com to start the approval process. One of the leadership will let you know if your persona has been approved, or if there's anything that needs to be changed. Offline members should submit their personas or requests by snail mail to: Debbe King P.O. Box 11955 San Bernardino, CA 92423-1955 Once your persona has been approved, that's it! You can play with him or her 'till your heart's content. You are encouraged to post messages on the message board online at America On Line (key word: sci-fi, fantasy forum, Pern Weyrs folder), attend gathers, and write or draw as much, or as little, as you desire. Newsletters, or Storyzines ---------------------------- This is the main activity of our Weyr. Since members are spread across the country, it's hard to keep in contact. This is where the `zine comes in. These Weyr newsletters are comprised of several things. In them, you will find club news, of course, as well as articles, member columns, book reviews, and anything the members care to contribute. But what you will mostly find is stories. Stories are written by the membership, and involve their personas and the personas of other members. The Weyr encourages members to contribute stories, but they are not mandatory. After all, the more you participate, the more fun you'll have, but we can't force you to have fun. Ranked members are expected to contribute in some way, however, with either artwork, stories, poems, letters to the editor, book reviews, con reports, columns, cartoons... We'll print almost anything. And the Weyrleaders are always looking for help with the mundane aspects of the Weyr, such as editing, promoting to prospective new members, or just help with online or offline gathers. We use Word 6.0 as our platform for the zine. Please keep in mind, that if you use another person's character(s) in your writing, that they need to approve the sotry and be given writing credit as well. Anne has asked her fans not to upload fan-written Pern stories to any online network, so please send your stories only through e-mail or USMail. Role playing and posting stories on newsgroups and message boards has been expressly forbidden. But articles, persona sheets, etc, can still be uploaded to the library or posted on the bulletin board. Becoming a Member of MoonSet Weyr --------------------------------- Online Membership to the MoonSet Weyr is free. You can post on the bulletin board, attend online gathers, submit stories and articles to the 'zine, attend online meetings, interact with other members of the Weyr, and generally have a good time. MoonSet is a new Weyr, having started only January 1, 1995, but we are growing very quickly! We publish a Quarterly 'zine called MoonSong. To submit articles for MoonSong, Email your story, article, artwork, etc. to Selest MS@aol.com, here online, or SnailMail them to: Debbe King P.O. Box 11955 San Bernardino, CA 92423-1955 The zine is issued on diskette and sent via email on a regular basis. We do this to save upload/download time and it is less expensive than a hardcopy `zine. We use either Adobe Acrobat (freeware on AOL and the internet used for issues 1 through 3 only) or Word 6.0 (currently) as our platforms. MoonSet Meetings on America Online ---------------------- We have weekly sessions in private chatroom MoonSet on AOL. (Go to People Connection, click on private chatroom and type in MoonSet) at 6pm pacific, 7pm mountain, 8pm central and 9pm eastern every Sunday. The business portion (should we need one) and is followed by the rp (roleplay) session. The setting for the session is sent with the quarterly `zine as well as announced at the beginning of each session. If you arrive late, the Watch Weyr will send you IM and let you know the setting. It is logged sent via email to all members with approved personas. A few simple rules and everything can run smoothly: 1. The beginning of the meeting will be for weyr business only. 2. You may ask any questions you have about the subject we are discussing, but we ask that you save any unrelated questions until the end of the meeting when we will have an open question forum. If you have a question or comment relating to the topic being discussed, please ::raise your hand:: and wait to be recognized. It will save time if you type in your question or comment after you raise your hand, so that when you are recognized, all you have to do is press enter. If someone else asks your question, or your question is answered during the discussion, please ::lower your hand::. Please do not ask the same questions over and over, week after week. Specific questions relating to your persona are best handled via e-mail, not during meetings. 3. Dragons and personas are asked not to talk until the meeting is over. 4. If you have anything you would like discussed, please email it to the weyrleaders before the meeting. Last minute additions to the agenda should be IM'd to Selest MS at the very beginning of the meeting. 5. Please no instant messages to the weyrleaders until after the meeting unless you have something you would like discussed that you were unable to get to us before the meeting. If you have something that should be discussed with the weyrleaders, please IM the Weyrlingmasters-at-arms, DragonKat1, and she/he will pass the message on, or give you permission to IM the weyrleaders. 6. Each meeting concludes with a section for Questions and Announcements. This is your chance to ask something that has not been covered earlier. Please do not ask if your persona has been approved at a meeting. That is handled strictly by email. 7. If you arrive late, or must leave early, please do so quietly. You should IM your friends that you are here or leaving so they can say hello or goodbye, please do not interrupt the meeting for this. Also, should you arrive late. please IM the WAA (DragonKat1) to find out what has been discussed, so it doesn't need to be repeated for each latecomer. We hope these guidelines will help us have a more profitable meeting and allow those of you who have limited chat time to be able to make more meetings! We are trying to keep the business short, so we have more time to play! RP (roleplaying) sessions are held immediately following the business meeting. This is your chance to play your character and interact with the rest of the members. Each rp session has a setting and is emailed prior to the meeting. For any setting suggestions, activities or special requests, please email MS Shib@aol.com. This meeting is logged for the general membership. few guidelines so we can all have fun: When roleplaying, whether it be live, email, or written story, show proper respect to rank when interacting with other persona. MoonSet Weyr is more laid-back than the northern weyrs, so calling the Weyrleader by name, instead of "Sir" is tolerated in most cases. However, even though we are laid back on the "Sir & Ma'am" parts, that doesn't mean we don't show the Leadership respect. Unlike rank in the Holds, MoonSet Weyr doesn't regard rank as who your parents are, but rather they hold rank as recognition of achievement. Along with rank most people earn the respect of their fellow weyrfolk, and they are to be addressed according to their rank. (Except in friendly situations) For example, If a weyrling was talking to K'las he or she would address him as "Sir" and would not talk back to him. The same goes for all the Leadership positions, including wingleaders and their 'seconds. If you are in doubt IM the watchweyr or leadership. A quick reference guide is also available so you will be able to know who holds what position. 1. Many members use these sessions as a basis for stories to meet their writing requirements, so don't assume that everyone will want to jump into your story line. If you want to use a specific persona(s), it's wise to check with them before you are knee-deep into your rp. 2. Be patient when waiting for another to respond to you. Many members are playing more than one persona and it takes time and concentration to do that! 3. If you have multiple approved personas, you may only play 3 at any rp session. For two reasons, one, it's hard for everyone to keep that many people straight and, two, it gives others a chance to play. 4. Be reasonable with your persona in rp. For instance, teenagers rarely hang around 30 year olds by choice and a weyrling doesn't disobey a senior rider! Also try not to have your persona the center of attention at every session. It's not fair to the others. 5. To help newer members, we have a designated Watch Weyr for the rp sessions. This person does not rp but answers Pern and Weyr questions, keeps us "Pernese" ( we don't have watches or Shakespeare ) and also helps us to stay within a PG-13 guideline for our many teen members. This is all handled via IM. If you do not have access to AOL, printed logs are available. Contact Debbe King at the above address for details. Also if you would like to hold meetings or rp sessions elsewhere on the internet, please contact Debbe King for details. Creating a Pernese Persona -------------------------- There are three ways to become a dragonrider at MoonSet Weyr: 1) Impress a Hatchling Let us know what clutch you would like to be a candidate for, and we'll let you know if you've Impressed and the color of your new weyrmate. Weyrwoman Jerita will announce any upcoming Hatchings. If you have a particular color dragon you'd like to Impress, please let us know of your request in advance, and we'll see what we can do. 2) Backdate MoonSet does practice what's become known as "instant dragon. In creating your persona, if you want a dragon that came from a past clutch, just let us know how old your weyrmate is now, and the color you'd like. We will check over the clutch chart and see if there are any eggs left un-Impressed at the time you were a candidate. (We are a new Weyr, so we don't have many clutches to be backdated yet.) Then we'll let you know the exact date of your Impression, any clutchmates you may have, and the parents of your dragon. Remember, bronze dragons, of any age, must be earned. Since a gold egg's hatching is a special event, we will not be backdating any gold dragons. Contact Weyrwoman Jerita for a hatch date. Remember, Golds are ONLY ridden by female characters, and bronzes by males. 3) Transfer From a Different Weyr Just fill out the persona sheet, with the Weyr you transferred from, and send it in. All transfers from active weyrs must be approved by that weyr's leadership before we can agree to final approval. (If the Weyr is NPC, then there is usually no problem with transfers. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts.) The age limit for character Impression is 12-21 turns (Your persona's age, not your own), so be sure to consider that while you're creating your persona's timeline. MoonSet allows female personas to Impress fighting dragons, except bronzes, and male personas can Impress any but golds. Dragons come in gold, bronze, brown, blue, and green. The shades may vary according to the individual, but not drastically so. Anne has asked that there be no more white, odd-colored, or sport dragons on fannish Pern. So there won't be any more white dragons or other odd colors (i.e. Black, red etc). Members get to name their own dragons, but in terms of your stories, your dragon will tell you. If, instead of becoming a dragonrider, you want to be a crafter, just remember that a crafter has to spend a time as an apprentice (usually start about age 13) at one of the major crafthalls (3-7 turns depending on the craft), then spend a lot of time as a journeyman (5-10 turns or more). If you want your persona to be both a dragonrider and a crafter, remember: dragons take a lot of time and energy. You can't be both a full-time craftsman and a dragonrider at the same time. Any craft your persona was involved in before Impression will become not much more than a hobby after Impression. If you want to become the CraftMaster of a craft, email The Weyrwoman, and she'll check and see if there's already a CraftMaster. If there's not, she'll check a few other things, and if everything works out, you'll become CraftMaster. Just remember, being a Craftmaster takes a lot of time--you can't be both a dragonrider and a CraftMaster. If you wish to become a Holder in MoonSet territory, you'll need to check on that with Weyrwoman Jerita. Since we are a new Weyr there is a lot of land to be held. Gold Egg Requirements --------------------------- Gold eggs are rare and must be earned. In addition, to the writing requirements for after Impression, the following should be kept in mind to be considered a serious gold candidate: 1. Attend as many business meetings and rp sessions as possible. Basically, regular attendance, at least 3 months prior to the hatching is expected. 2. Submission via email to the leadership of a goldrider persona with a statement explaining why she would be a good queenrider and why you (mundanely) have earned this position. 3. Each candidate will be asked to chair a business meeting prior to the hatching and will be expected to fill-in for the leadership from time to time after Impression. 4. Assist in rp by helping newer and/or shy members to get involved. 5. Prior to the hatching, the membership will be asked to offer their recommendations for goldrider. While this is not a vote (the leadership makes the final decision), they may know of hidden talents! 6. Volunteer! Is there something you see that needs to be done? Check with the leadership first (just to make sure it isn't already in progress). Or ask if you can take over one of the many lists that must be regularly updated. Weyrlings: ------------ A few notes specific to weyrlings at MoonSet Weyr. Training in the weyrling wing is 18 months long (in real time as well as Pernese) plus two months in the Queen's Wing. Goldriders do an additional 9 months of training beyond the standard 20 months. Weyrlings cannot transfer to another weyr during their training months. It's stressful on the dragonet and dangerous for the rider. The Weyrlingmaster and his seconds are in charge of the well-being and safety of the weyrlings and dragonets. Whatever K'las says, goes. A typical weyrling day begins just after dawn with lessons and training, a short break at mid-day for meal, afternoon lessons and/or assigned chores and then evening meal. Any other activities, such as oiling your dragonet, mending harnesses, visiting friends can be done after evening meal or on Rest Day. Mating Flights: ------------- Dragons mature around their second turn, with the exception of golds that take another 6 months to a turn to mature. This gives them time to complete training and have a few months of fighting experience before the intense emotions of a mating flight. A mating flight is one of the few times that the rider is the calming influence on his dragon rather than the other way around. Green rise about every 3-4 months while a gold will rise 2-3 times per turn depending on the needs of the weyr. The senior queen can control the mating urges and flights of the junior queens if there is a need to control the clutches. These are average sizes, some variation is to be expected. The "large" and "small" sizes given are maximum and minimum sizes to that color, so no larger or smaller dragons will be accepted.) Where and When Impressed: Which Weyr? Date? Sire/Dam: Parents Physical Appearance: Scars, build, shading, etc. Personality: Dragons are just as much a part of your character as the human aspect of them. Please give your friend a personality! NPC - NonPersona Characters --------------------------- Please list the names and rank of those whose creative control you hold. (i.e., your persona's parents, children, brothers, sisters, and anyone you create for your stories.) Please fill out an abbreviated Persona Sheet for these personas so we can list them in the MoonSet Database. (I.e. write a Physical description for them, ranks they hold etc.) Persona Upkeep Policy --------------------- The persona upkeep policy at MoonSet Weyr is mostly to keep those people holding major positions active in our Weyr. Such Major positions include: Goldriders, Wingleaders, Lord/Lady Holders, Weyrhealer, Weyrsinger, Weyrharper (basically Weyr anything), Master Healers, Master Harpers, Master Dolphineers, Dolphins etc. Since these positions are very high in demand there are some things you must do to make sure that you can retain your position. Goldriders are the most coveted positions. Since so many people want a Goldrider Persona, keeping this persona is slightly harder than most other positions. You must have at least one (1) accepted item in each issue of MoonSong, that's 4 items a year, to keep this position. These items can come in the form of Stories, articles, tunings, reports, columns, or basically anything that's written. Members with Goldrider Personas must also be actively involved in either rp or email and with the mundane side of MoonSet Weyr and serve as watch weyr 4 times per year. Wingleaders must have two (2) accepted Wing Reports per year. This keeps other members informed about the events happening in your Wing, as well as giving future dragonriders an idea about what the different wings are like. They, as well as wingseconds, should be active in email threads/rp sessions, especially those that focus on threadfall and mating flights. Wingleaders and wingseconds are required to act as watch weyr, at least, twice a year. Lord and Lady Holders are also very important positions; they must have two (2) accepted submissions per year. This can be a story featuring the Holder persona, a Hold report, article, or any combination of the three. This helps keep members informed about goings-on in the Holds. They also must serve as watch weyr twice per year. Dolphin personas are also very in-demand personas, and since there is a limited amount of positions in the Pod, these personas must be active. Members with Dolphin personas must have two (2) submissions a year, and at least one of the two submissions must be a story. The other submission can be an article, column of some sort, report, or even artwork. For these last positions, the requirements are essentially the same. Weyrlingmaster, Weyrlingmaster 2nd, Weyrharper/Weyrsinger, Weyrhealer, Headwoman, Holder and the like all need to have at least two (2) accepted submissions per year and serve as watch weyr twice per year. Any persona that holds a master level; masterhealer, mastersmith, etc. must have one (1) submission a year and serve as watch weyr once per year. Again, this can be an article, column, report, artwork or story. Any member who has four or more approved personas will need to have one submission per year per persona. This can be a single story that features all of them or a separate story per persona. These cannot be "walk-on" parts but an active part of the story. Co-authoring with another member is encouraged! The reason we do this is to keep people with major personas active in MoonSet Weyr so that other members will become familiar with their personas. It's also a way to make people work for their positions. And since these persona types are in high demand it isn't fair to other members if they don't contribute to the Weyr. You may be wondering what exactly we are looking for in a submission for MoonSet Weyr. Well, here's a description of what we're looking for. A submission is defined as: a story, article, tuning, or report. Any other submission that you may send in that is not one of the above, may or may not count towards your persona requirements. If you're not sure if something will be accepted for your requirements, ask one of the Weyrleaders, who'll be sure to know. We understand that sometimes mundane commitments and problems do get in the way of your fanfiction and persona requirements, so we will give you two issues to catch up on your requirements. If you have a valid excuse or an emergency, be sure to tell the Weyrleaders so that they do not give your position to someone else because you have not been actively participating. These Guidelines were mostly for members who hold Major Persona positions in MoonSet Weyr or who have numerous personas. Not everyone can have a Major position, but we do wish that everyone actively participates in our 'zine, so we request that our members write at least one (1) story per year for each of their (non-Major position) personas. This, however, is simply a request from the Weyrleaders. Firelizards: ------------ Since MoonSet Weyr is on the Southern Continent, there is an abundance of Firelizards and eggs; we have some rules and requests for those of you who have considered having a firelizard as a pet. 1) Members can not have more than three firelizards per Persona/NPC and no more than six flitters in total. Golds and bronzes must be earned. 2) All Firelizards must come from approved clutches; no one can just write in that their persona has a flitter. These firelizards must be attained at hatchings that are scheduled periodically at MoonSet Weyr; if you want a flitter, email the Weyrleadership, and they'll put you on the list. 3) All Firelizard hatchings/clutches must be approved by the Weyrleadership. We request that our members only start out with one firelizard. It's hard to write stories using multiple 'lizards, and since these firelizards are supposed to be going into stories, we ask you to start with only one. These rules are only to help the Weyrleadership limit the amount of flitters (especially Gold and Bronze) so we don't have an outrageous number. A few notes: ------------ Please remember that this is only a guide, designed to help you create your persona and make him/her more "real" to you. Don't worry if you haven't filled in each and every blank line. Characters develop as they're written about, and you can always update later. Don't worry if you're not sure what is 'Pernish' or not, we're here to help you. Stick to Anne's guidelines and you should do very well when designing your character. A reminder of these guidelines are as follows: 1) Please no use of any of Anne's characters. (If you're unsure if a character is Anne's or not, just ask one of us.) 2) Benden Weyr, Ruatha Hold and the main HarperCraft Hall are off limits. Your persona may have been born at one of these locations or trained there, but they must never have any storyline interaction with the CraftMaster, Lord Holder or Weyrleaders. 3) Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue and Green dragons only. Gold riders must be female, Bronze riders must be male. Anybody can Impress Blue, Green, or Brown Dragons. 4) No special gifts... no hearing all dragons, no special gift of healing, no E.S.P. beyond contact with your dragon. This is extremely rare; dragons just don't care to talk to others who are not their riders. If you really want this talent, you had better be able to justify it to the publisher; chances are it will not be accepted. More Notes: ----------- 1) We at MoonSet an agrarian society. Therefore, although many hundreds of turns have past, not many more technological advancements have occurred. No television, radio, telephone or smog (factories or automobiles). Any other technological advancements must be submitted with a story outline explaining the special circumstance to Weyrwoman Jerita. We also have to coordinate our level of technology with the other weyrs in our Pass so we have a consistent time line. 2) No non-pern characters will be allowed. Tempting as it is to have a crossover from another fictional world, we do not want a sudden influx of Klingons, Elves or any other fictional character. You may wish to model a persona after a character from another world or author, but please keep your characters as true to Pern as possible. We reserve the right to reject any character or details that conflict with established policies. If we reject part of your character, it isn't that we don't want you--you just need to try again. Remember we are MORE than willing to work with you. Just let us know so we can work it out. If you intend to have more than one persona, then please fill out one persona sheet for each persona. You can have as many personas as you'd like at the Weyr. Good advice is to start small, with just one alter-ego. Please remember, we're all human, with human strengths and weaknesses. Please don't try to make a 'super' character. A person with no faults isn't very interesting or fun to write about, and even less fun for the other members to read about. But a character with a few personality quirks is always fun in stories. When you finish your MoonSet Persona Sheet, please upload it to Selest MS@aol.com, she'll look it over, then either approve it, or send it back to you with what needs to be fixed. (This is so your Persona doesn't get rejected.) Now just fill in the blanks below and you'll be ready to join MoonSet Weyr!
