Background

The L'eght Beast is a native carnivorous predator from the sweltering jungles of Behacor Prime. It is the top of the native food chain on the planet, no predator hunts the great beast, no predator other than the Klingon's of the Reshtarc Line.

The Reshtarc lords have long held hunting expeditions into the jungle, for the sport of killing one of these most dangerous beasts. Each klingon carries one knife, one sword and a disruptor pistol for last ditch defense, although any disruptor shot is sure to cause derision against the wielder.

Cavalry

Another use for the L'eght Beast is the Reshtarcs' most elite and prestigious units, the L'eght Beast Cavalry. The riders of the cavalry must venture into the jungle and capture a young L'eght Beast and return it alive to train it. After a few years, rider and beast have been thoroughly bonded, and may join the cavalry. The bond has been so severe that after a rider is killed, the beast may never let another ride it, in this case the beast is destroyed.

Notable units include the Reshtarc Lancers and the Belial 2 Lancers.

Physiology

The History: Legh't beasts are a unique link to the past history of Behacor Prime. These creatures descended from the original dinosaur inhabitants, share a common bond 75million years old. When one see's the Leght beast one can imagine the fierce dinosaurs that once claimed the planet for their own.

Why the Legh't beast did not die out with it's relatives is an ongoing argument. My study of the Legh't beast's revealed an uncanny ability to reason. Perhaps this alone was the key to the Legh't beasts survival and eventual dominance over the emerging Mammalian and reptilian life forms.

The majority of Behacor Primes dinosaur species died out following an asteroid collision which caused severe weather pattern disruptions. These disruptions lasted for generations ultimately killing off the dinosaurs unable to cope with the rapidly changing conditions.

Only a few species survived the majority of which inhabited Behacor Primes oceans. Only one directly linked species has so far been recorded on land. That species is of course the Legh't beast. The Legh't beast is a much larger cousin to earth's Velociraptor.

This supports earth's premier Archaeologist George P. Lowell's theory of multiple seeding of many species by an alien intelligence. The legh't beast towers over it's smaller cousin, being 20 feet from the tip of it's nose to the end of it's tail. Though there are records of larger Legh't beasts in the deep jungle.

These are unconfirmed and may be a unique sub species. The largest recorded Legh't beast was 26 feet 3 inches. So this does not toss out the idea of larger Legh't beast's. Currently an expedition is being mounted by joHwI' Marrik epetai-Reshtarc, to explore the deeper jungles. The hopes of which will verify existing species and catalog any unreported ones.

Legh't beasts are a pack animal preferring to hunt and live in tightly organized groups. This pack mentality allows them to hunt much larger and stronger prey. The emergence of the Mammals forced the Legh't beast to adjust their tactic's while hunting the smaller and more fleet mammals.

Of the 26 known species of Legh't beast's only thirteen are known to survive on the surface of Behacor Prime. Of these thirteen, eight are considered to be useful as mounts for Reshtarc nobles and military unit's such as the Belial 2 Lancers and Reshtarc Lancers.

The Legh't beast has no known natural predators, though it get's competition from the Grishnar's introduced into the wild. The CathuH'a a large reptile also is known to tangle with solitary or small groups of Legh't beasts.

The CathuH'a uses camouflage and it's immense armoured body as tools to hunt and kill Legh't beasts which come near it's lair. Legh't beasts will avoid the CathuH'a's territory but will not shun from fighting one.

Legh't beasts are very sharp witted and learn quickly which is why they must be trained before they reach a year old. Legh't beasts caught in the wild will not associate with their domesticated brethren. Attempts made by Reshtarc Doctors and Veterinarians to keep the tow together resulted in violent but brief combat which is usually fatal to both combatants.

Organization: Pack oriented, matriarchal one female dominant, males hunt.
Found: All continents and significant land masses have populations of Legh't beasts on them.
Breeding cycle: Dominant female will lay 1 clutch of 20-36 eggs. Once a year during the early spring .
Life cycle: Average Twenty years. Develop rapidly they are lethal after 8 months and fully grown by 15 months. Males tend to live a shorter span around 17 years.Females live 20 years.

The Legh't beast lives it's entire natural life in pursuit of the hunt. These swift hunters speed in packs through jungle and across plains in pursuit of prey. The pack is formed around one female the Matriarch. The Matriarch is not always the strongest or swiftest, but generally is the most intelligent of the pack.

The Matriarch is the only female which will breed out of the group. The other females remain sterile. That is until a matriarch dies and another has taken it's place. The matriarch will choose several males from the pack to breed with.

These will be the males which show the best characteristics necessary for the pack's continuance. These males will be selected for Size, Stamina, speed and intelligence. The pack will accept new males, but will kill wandering females. The average leght beast pack numbers around 30 to 35 with over half generally being juveniles. The rest is made up one to five females and around twelve males.

Legh't beast have the ability to conceive young year around, however this is only done in the most severe circumstances and only if the pack is threatened with extinction. The young hatch from their egg's 6-8weeks after being laid. They will be protected within the confines of a large earthen mound with eggs in the center. The females will protect the nest while the males hunt.

During that period the other females, not the Matriarch, tend to the egg's. Once hatched they will also tend to the training and feeding of the juveniles. The males will not be allowed near the juveniles until they are around eight months old.

After which the young are left to fend for their own and join the hunt. Around this time unwanted females are driven out so are weaker young. The solitary females will find a solitary male and start a pack. This is rare since most solitary Legh't beasts die within the first six months after being driven from the pack.

The pack along with the Matriarch will hunt for prey, Legh't beasts are highly territorial with their territory covering hundreds of miles in some cases. This often brings them in conflict with other predators as well as other packs.

These battles are bloody affairs and result in both packs being destroyed or severely depleted. It is through this process that the packs are kept in a stable niche within Behacor Primes ecosystem.

The Reshtarc moratoriums on development on Behacor Prime provides the Legh't beast with a relatively unspoiled ecosystem. Hunting of these creatures is permitted only by authority of the Reshtarc. Generally speaking, it is frowned upon to hunt the Legh't beast unless once is getting a mount.

The Legh't beast is extremely swift obtaining speeds in excess of fifty kph. They also posses incredible leaping ability. They use a combination of these skills when hunting. A general legh't beast hunt will begin with the pack splitting into three groups. Two of the groups will move up out of sight and fan out along the herd or targets flanks and slightly ahead of the target.

The third group composed of the swiftest form a loose line and drive the herd or prey toward the others. This form of noose soon has the prey running in circles. This allows the Legh't beasts to tackle the weaker prey. After killing enough to provide for there requirements the Legh't beasts ignore the others and gorge themselves on the fresh kill.

Immature juveniles (1- 8 months old) are given food by the females and comes from the females kill. The males will also provide the pack with sufficient food. The matriarch generally directs the entire hunt with very little involvement from herself.
