cover pictureThough this book is really nothing more than a preface to the rest of the Blegariad, and the events in it merely set the stage for the real story, Eddings has a compelling style that makes even the most mundane story an interesting read. It's a book that can be enjoyed by both long-time fantasy fans and those who haven't read much fantasy before. In Pawn of Prophecy, you are introduced not only to the main characters of the Blegariad series, but to their intricate and fascinating world. Though you have to read all of the Belgariad and Mallorean, to understand the epic scope of Eddings' history, the glimpses that can be found in Pawn of Prophecy only add to this excellent narrative

Pawn of Prophecy doesn't stand on its own, none of these books are meant to be read independently of the others, but it's a must for anyone who wants to read any of the other books in the Belgariad. Warning! Very addictive. If you don't' have to time to read the five thick volumes of the Belgariad and the five more in the following Mallorean, I'd keep away from this book.
