Adoption Help

Help! How do I adopt something?

Ok, here's how you get this nifty dragon or unicorn or whatever from my page to yours. I've written it so that even the completely computer illiterate will hopefully be able to follow it. So don't be offended if you already know most of it. Also, if after following these instructions things still don't work, you can mail me for more help at bladespark@hotmail.com.

Saving

First thing you need to do is move the picture from my page to your computer. Here's how you do that.

For IBM comaptible PC users:
1. Put your cursor over the image of the creature you're adopting. Now look at your mouse, you have at least two, maybe three buttons right? (If you only have one, guess what, you're using a Mac, so look at the next set of instructions.)

2.Find the one on the right and click it. Now you have a little menu on your screen that says things like "set as wallpaper" or "save image as," right?

3. Click on the "save image as" one. Now you've got another little menu, right?

4. At the top there's one of those pull-down boxes. Click on the arrow to pull it down and look at the options. Chose one. Remeber the one you chose!

5.At the bottom will be another little space with something like "chromebl.gif" in it already. The "chromebl" part is the image name, you can change it if you want to, but you have to leave the ".gif" part as it is, or it will really mess things up.

6. Click the button that says "Save." Ta da! You're done with saving.

For Macintosh/Apple users:

1. Put your mouse over the picture of the creature you want to adopt.

2. Leave it there for a bit. You should get a little pop-up menu saying things like "save image as" or maybe just "save as" (It's been so long since I used a Mac, I'm not sure...)

3. Choose "save image as" or "save as" if there isn't any "save image as." Now you should have another little pop-up thing.

4. Find the box on that that gives you a choice of directorys. Again, it's been so long since I used a Mac, I don't know where it is, but you can probably find it. Chose a directory. Remember which one you chose!

5. Find the other little space where it says something like "chromebl.gif" That's the name of the image your'e saving. You can change the "chromebl" part if you wnat to name it something else, but you need to leave the ".gif" bit the way it is or you'll mess things up.

6. Find the button that says "Save" Push it. You're done with the saving part.

Uploading.

Now you need to get it from your computer to your home page directory. I know how to do this for Geocities and Tripod users. All others will have to figure it out on their own.

At Geocities

I'm assuming here that you already have a Geocities page and a password for it. If you don't I can't help you.

1. Go to this address: http://www.geocities.com/members/tools/file_manager.html

2. Click on the button and when the thing pops up enter your Geocities username and password.

3. You are now in a new page. It may take a bit to load. Once it does, find the EZ Upload link and click on it (or scroll down, either one will take you there.)

4. Click on the button that says "Browse" If you have no button that says "Browse," you'll have to FTP. You will have to go elsewhere for how-to's on that because it would take way way too long to explain it here.

5. Now you ought to have a window that looks just like the one you used to save earlier. Find the directory you saved the picture in (you were supposed to remeber it, right?)

6. When you get there, (if you have a PC anyway) you probably won't see your picture. Don't panic. Find the pull-down box labled "file types" and chose "all types." (Mac users may ignore this step.)

7. Click on your picture name and it will appear in the box below. Then click on the button labeled "Open" Your picture name should now be in the little box next to the "Browse" button.

8. Hit the "Upload Files" button that's below. Ta Da, after a short wait, your picture is now in your directory.

For Tripod users

I assume you already have a Tripod page and a password, otherwise I can't help you.

1. Go here: http://www.tripod.com/build/ and when it asks you for your user name and passowrd, enter them.

2. Click on the link to the Homepage Housekeeper.

3. When you get there, find the pull-down box near the top and pull it down. Choose "upload new files."

4. Follow steps 4-8 above.

Putting it on your page

Now you want to have this nifty creature you just adopted show up on your home page, so that's next.

This works the same for all html-based editors. If you use an editor that doens't have a spot to write in html tags, you'll have to write me or someobdy for adviec, because I don't use them, so I'm not putting instructions for them here.

1. Assuming that you're still at the file manager/homepage housekeeper, find the page you want the picture to be on. (If you're new to this, you most likely will just have an index.html, so you'd probably better put the pic there.)

2. Chose the "edit" option for that page, either by clicking on "edit" right next to it (tripod) or by checking the box and then clicking on "edit" below (geocities).

3. Find the spot on the page you want the pic to appear. If you're new to html, just be sure it's after the < body > thing but before the < /body > thing. It also has to be outside of any other tags. You can't put it between a < and a >

4. At the spot you've chosen, put this, only replace the ( with < and the ) with > (img src="chromebl.gif") Replace chromebl with whatever you named it if you changed the name.

Now it should be on your page. If you've had any problems with any of this, go ahead and mail me at bladespark@hotmail.com for further advice.
