Back in the series' heyday, Paramount's official Sentinel page described the series' premise as follows:
| THE SENTINEL, which is set in the fictional town of Cascade, Washington, stars Richard Burgi as Lt. Detective Jim Ellison. An ex-soldier, Ellison survived 18 primeval months in the depths of a Peruvian jungle. This ordeal bred in him skills that hearken back to tribal cultures when watchmen, or "sentinels," honed their senses to the highest degree. With an acumen more animal than human, Ellison sees, hears, tastes, smells and feels with searing prowess, and utilizes these skills to track down terrorists, hijackers and assassins. Nearly overwhelmed by his own skills, Ellison reluctantly teams up with anthropology graduate student Blair Sandburg (Garett Maggart), whose encyclopedic knowledge of the "sentinel" myth helps Ellison harness his newly discovered abilities. Sandburg becomes a permanent police department observer -- which means he gets drawn into a host of missions and investigations, often to Ellison's chagrin -- Ellison becomes a hunter of evil, a one-of-a-kind crime fighter...and THE SENTINEL comes to life. |
The Sentinel was, along with Star Trek: Voyager, a top series during the early days of the United Paramount Network (UPN). Its following was nothing short of astonishing--it was so strong, in fact, that the show accomplished the impossible, surviving a decision by network executives to cancel it in the summer of 1998 and returning for a fourth and final season on UPN. The fandom remains strong today.
