Babylon 5 has the distinction of being one of the few TV series whose conclusion was already determined before the first episode ever aired--a 5-season story arc, plotted out by its creator, J. Michael Straczynski. (I'm sure I don't need to tell you what degree of detail that entails.) That kind of commitment, along with the profile of its competition (Star Trek) meant that it took a while for a studio to pick it up; but once it got on the air, it paid off--and fanfic authors have reciprocated with commitments of their own.
