What fan fiction did for Star Trek in the 1970's, it did for Star Wars in the 1980's. The fiery rebirth of the franchise, sparked by the new line of Star Wars novels and culminating in the release of the prequel trilogy beginning with Episode I: The Phantom Menace, owes its success to the foundations quietly built and maintained by a dedicated fandom which has blossomed with the advent of the Internet.
