Patlabor

Type: TV Series
Genre: Police Story

Due to global warming, the Babylon Project is initiated to seal off Tokyo Bay, and create more real estate. New industrial machines called 'labors' were developed for the Project. Labors vary, but most fit the "giant robot" mold. Being so versatile, labors were also used for crime, so the Patrol Labor (PatLabor) was developed. This is the story of a police unit which uses the patlabor model 'Ingram' -- SVD Section 2.

Robotech

Type: TV Series
Genre: War story

Not exactly anime, but this seems to be most people's intro to anime. A combination of 3 anime series ("Macross", "Southern Cross", "Genesis Climber Mospeada") with a linking concept ("Protoculture"), this is a story about 3 wars between humanity and 3 different alien races over possession of Protoculture. For the most part, general plots were retained, though details were changed. As an introduction to anime, this series was fairly well done and self-consistent. Now available on video.

NOTE: "Robotech" changed the original anime series and most fans seem to agree that the originals were better...except for "Southern Cross".

The crashed alien spacecraft, rebuilt as the SDF-1.
An alien spaceship crashes on Macross Island, and Earth has to deal with the alien fleet which is following it. However, human civilization is an example of 'protoculture' which the Zentraedi (the aliens) are suppose to avoid. Dubbed and marketed as a segment of the 'Robotech' series.
