Let us talk for a moment about vampires. Searching the web, I have come acrossed many myths and legends. Rarely, will I come acrossed a fact about our kind. On this page, I intend to put the myths to rest, and clear up, once and for all, the facts.
First, we will examine the origin of the vampire.
Vampires first originated in early Egypt. The queen, at the time, Akasha, was posessed by a spirit known as Amel. This spirit had a lust for blood. When he posessed Akashas' body, the blood lust that persued was one that she could not handle alone. For this reason, she infected her husband, Enkil, with a piece of the spirit. From this point, Akasha and Enkil, spread the disease throughout Egypt.
It was spread through the exchange of blood. The host, or vampire, would take the blood of the victim. After this was done, the victim would drink the blood of the vampire. From this point, the infected blood, would replace the blood of the victim, making him a vampire. This is the only way that the disease could be spread from one person to the other. If you looked into a dictionary for the word, Vampire, this is the explaination that you would find.
Vampire- the reanimated body of a dead person believed to come from the grave at night and suck the blood of persons asleep. One who lives by preying on others.
This definition is a cold fact. The body does die when one is turned into a vampire. The diseased, vampire blood takes over the natural blood in a person, making them crave the blood of others for eternity. But with everything, there is a good, and bad side. The bad side, of course, is that the body dies. With the mortal death, comes the death of mortal pleasures. Sexual intercourse is no longer a possibility, the light of day is severly painful and can destroy most vampires, the lust for blood every night that one rises, and living for eternity. The pain of not having children, of having to change identities regularly to not bring attention to yourself, and not having mortal friends, for they bring questions that can not be answered, is also the price of the dark kiss. These things can be heart breaking for a vampire. Especially one that does not have companions to share these troubles with.
There are things that vampires posess that mortals do not. For instance, the senses are intensified 100 fold. The beauty of the night, can be treasured for eternity. In replace of sexual stimulation, is the exchange of blood. A vampire can show his effection for another by giving their blood. Some would say that the gift of eternity can be a wonderful thing. This is true, to an extent. If a vampire has the right companion, eternity can seem like not enough time. Being able to see things rise and fall, centuries past before your eyes, can be a wonderful thing for a hostorian. But for some vampires, this fact can drive them underground The biggest plus, in being a vampire is the feelings that are intensified with the dark gift. A vampire feels, senses, and loves in a way that no mortal could. The strongest bond being between a fledging and its maker. This bond, can rarely be broken.
Now, let's continue on to the many myths of a vampire. These are things that I found around the web, here and there, that I wish to address.
  • Immortality- many believe that vampires do not die and also that they do not age.

This is correct. Vampires do not age with time. They do not change in form from when they are made a vampire. If a vampire is made at a young age, they stay that age, by site, for eternity. And yes, I mean eternity.

  • Crucifixes/religious items- horror films would have us believe that these are the only protection against the undead.

This is a terrible myth that Catholics made up to help ease their fears. It is a fabrication. Crusifixes, holy water, and chants, will not save anyone.

  • Flying- vampires are believed to have the ability to fly, either in human form or by transforming into a bat.

Vampires can fly, this is a fact. The skill to fly is one that is opened through the mind. Not through transforming into a bat. This is a fabrication made by hollywood. There are several areas of the mind that mortals don't use. It is told that only 10% of the brain is used. It is my believe that vampires awake something in the other 90% of the brain that makes flying a possibility. But this is only my opinion. It also could be given by the transfusion of blood. The wraith that was passed on from vampire to vampire, may have been what made the possibility of flight a reality. This is all a matter of opinion. Never the less, it is true.

  • Shape Shifting- Some believe that vampires have the power to change shape. From wolf, mist, dog or rat.
Personally, I have never seen such events. Nor have I heared of such things. Not within my family, or from any other source. I would have to say, this is a myth.

  • hypnotic seduction- One of the main dangers from a vampire, is believed to be the ability to hold sway over the human mind, seducing them into becoming a victim.
I would have to agree with this one. Vampires do have the ability to sway a victim into doing their will. This is not done through the use of hypnotism though, it is done by sending thoughts into the mind of the victim. I guess this could be considered hypnotism, in a sense.. but it is not the traditional definition of the word.

  • Garlic- In the world of hollywood, they would have you believe that vampires have a severe allery to garlic.
This is also a fabrication, made up by horror movies, to give a defense against vampires.

  • Superhuman strength- It is believed that vampires have a strength that surpasses that of a mortal.
This is indeed true. I can not explain this phenominon. Only to say that it is true. It could be, yet another thing that is awaken in parts of the brain.

  • Coffins- Because a vampire is a corpse, it is believed that they must sleep in coffins.
This is a myth that I am glad to put to rest. Coffins are not a necessity of our survival. It is something that some of the vampires, of the old ways, still use. The purpose is to keep the sunlight rays from us. The sunlight can kill a vampire. Coffins are designed heavily, and keep out the light. This can also be done by the advancements in technology that weren't present in the earlier days. Such as, window shades, heavy curtains, and things of this nature.

  • Staking- it is believed that a stake hammered through the heart will kill a vampire.

This is one of the most well known myths around. It is no more than that. A myth. Staking a vampire, will do nothing more than anger him, or give him reason to attack.

  • Protection of the Church- It is thought that if an intended victim hides on holy ground, the persuing vampire, can not follow.
This is another fabrication. I think it is comfortable for the church to use their worshiping items as a way to hord off evil. They would have the public believe that their god sent items will stop a vampire in his tracks. This is not true. I have known several vampires who frequent churches. I have been to the alter a few times myself.

  • Running Water- This is a new one for me. It is said that a vampire can not cross any form of running water.
I beg to differ. I have crossed several bodies of water, without a problem. I don't even have an explaination for this myth. Perhaps a vampire did not give chase to a mortal who crossed a body of water, not wanting to get wet, and the mortal took it to mean he couldn't cross. Whatever the reason, it is a myth.

  • No Mirror reflection- Vampires do not cast a reflection in a mirror?
::laughs:: I think our reflections are lovely. A myth.. plain and simple.

  • Food- A vampire is unable to eat or drink anything but blood.
This is true. Blood is our only source of nutrients.

  • Invitations- It is believed that vampires can not enter a house unless they are invited.
This is a terrible lie that has been going on for centuries. Vampires can enter anywhere that they choose. They need no invitation to take their victim anywhere, anytime. If they enter your home, they enter of their own free will, not the will of another.
  • There you have it. I hope that I have put to ease all of the myths and legends surrounding my kind. If you have anything further you would like explained, feel free to E-mail me your comments. Or if you would rather, you may use the E-mail Form and ask your questions in private.
Thank you for your interest, and enjoy the night.
