Based
at Fort Bragg North Carolina, First Special Operations Detachment - Delta,
the Army's top secret International Counter Terrorism unit based on the
exploits of 22 SAS have been involved in various operations since it's
formation on November 19th 1977. The unit was formed by a Colonel Charles
"Chargin' Charlie" Beckwith, a veteran of the SAS. After returning to the
U.S. Army he began to oversee the formation of a new Army SF unit dealing
with Counter-Terrorism.
Delta
is made up of some 800 members, many with highy specialized individual
skills, The organization of Delta remains a secret and the names of it's
members are never publicly acknowledged. The Pentagon still today refuses
to acknowledge their existence.
The
force is made up of a senior staff and three assault squadrons, designated
A, B, and C. The force is commanded by an Army Colonel with a Lieutenant
Colonel under him. Under them are more Lieutenant Colonels. Each of the
three assault squadrons has about seventy five commandos. A Squadron is
made up of troops consisiting of 15 - 21 men led by led by a captian or
major plus a senior sergeant major. The troops are further divided into
4-6 man teams of operators all of whom are senior Army sergeants. The troops
are made up of a mixture of snipers and assaulters. About one-third are
long-range marksmen, while the rest specialize in close-quarters door-busting
combat. The teams can also be organized by specialty such as a water or
air team skilled in S.C.U.B.A. diving or high-altitude parachuting. Another
may be a mountain team with climbers. Another may be a mobility team that
specializes in defensive or offensive driving. Their original main duty
was that of Hostage Rescue. The unit participated in an attempt to rescue
66 american hostages from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979. The mission
was unfortunatley unsuccessful. Delta has however broadened their mission.
It can be deployed anywhere in the world for any type of direct action
mission.
Recruits
for Delta volounteer from the 82nd Airborne, Special Forces, Rangers. They
are trained in all aspects of Counter-Terrorism, and are said to be one
of the worlds best concerning CQB (Close Quarters Battle).
SFOD-D
has seen action in various parts of the world including the Gulf War where
they participated in hunting Iraqi SCUD launchers and their lethal missiles,
in Bosnia hunting war criminals, Panama during the invasion and various
other secret operations.
