born 1940 in Chur, Switzerland. he counts artists jean cocteau, alfred kubin, and author h.p. lovecraft among his early influences. giger's phenomenal airbrush paintings have gained international acclaim through their appearance in his popular necronomicon art books. he received an academy award for his terrifying designs in the film alien and has had major exhibitions of his work throughout europe, america, and japan. in addition to being a painter, he is an accomplished sculptor and furniture designer. he has created an elegant fantastic bar in his birthplace in switzerland, based upon his unique biomechanical aesthetic. his latest film design project was the mgm science-fiction thriller species. |

10th century - arabian scholar hassan ibn hassan describes the camera
obscura 1725-27 - johann heinrich schultz discovers the darkening action of light on mixtures of chalk and silver nitrate. 1814-1826 - joseph nicephore niepce acheives first photographic image with a camera obscura. 1837 - louis jacques mande daguerre's first daguerreotype. 1851 - william henry fox talbot makes first instantaneous photographs using electric spark illumination. 1856 - photojournalism of crimean war by roger fenton, james robertson and carol popp de scathmari. 1869 - louis ducos du hauron's "colors in photography" describes the principles of color photography. 1878 - earweard muybridge publishes "the horse in motion". 1892 - frederick ives' first complete system for natural color photography. 1895 - auguste and louis lumiere's "workers leaving for the lumiere factory". 1900 - first mass-marketed camera, the brownie. 1932 - first light meter with photoelectric cell introduced. 1960 - first successful holograph produced. 1986 - eastman kodak announces the 1.4 megapixel ccd for digital cameras. 1988 - sony and fuji announce new digital cameras. |
