My Little Ponies were probably me best-loved toys as a child.
We had year-round school until I was in sixth grade, and as a newcomer
to the district I was on the least-beloved track -- completely opposite
to the traditional school schedule. (We went to school all summer
and only had a few days off for Christmas, but had long vacations in the
spring and the fall.) Since I was the only one in my neighborhood
on that track, the only people I had to play with during my vacations were
the kindergardeners and preschoolers. So, I kept playing with My
Little Ponies well past the normal age, I think.
We used to get out the ponies and my neighbor's Masters of the Universe guys, my Dream Castle and Castle Grayskull, and have wars. After the ponies finished trampling and goreing the action figures, we all sat and did their hair. This just proves that no matter how feminine, pastel, and non-violent the toy, kids will find a violent way to play with them -- girls as well as boys.
Unlike many adult pony collectors, I come from a long and distinguished family of pack rats. So, I don't have any stories to relate about how I sold all my ponies and regretted it later. The only pony I sold was a ceramic which I had bought at a garage sale, and I regret that enough, so I'm glad I still have my original herd more-or-less intact. I'm missing lots of shoes, combs, etc., and Firefly, Tex, and plush Bow Tie seem to have gone AWOL, but otherwise it's all good!
So, one day I was surfing the Web, and wandered onto Ebay -- or maybe my roommate did, I don't recall now -- and the rest, as they say, is history!
My last pony in my original herd: Tex (the Big Brother Pony)
My favorite pony from my original herd: Sparkler (the third-year unicorn), followed by Firefly
Pony I wanted most as a kid but never got: Medley, followed by Skyflier, Gusty, and Glory.
First pony I bought as an adult: Medley (surprise, surprise!) I have a great Skyflier now, too, and a passible Gusty, but I still need a really nice Glory...
Favorite Series of Pones: Third-Year Rainbows
Least-Favorite Series: BBE Babies
Opinion of the New Ponies: Just when they started to get cool, they stopped selling them in this country.
