"Fouriners go home!"
"Majis go home!"
"Furriners stink!"
The grafitti rapidly spreads to the areas around the old merchants' quarters. These neighborhoods were hurt economically by Zariya's decision to drive all foreign trade from the city, and now face competition due to the preferential treatment given to her immigrant proteges. Once-proud merchant families have been reduced to near-poverty by the flight of foreign customers from the city. Shelves are empty, and families have been forced to sell much of what they owned to pay the tax levies. Here, the spelling is better, and bitterness to the guild's sellout to Zariya is evident.
"Guilds abandon their own!"
"Amber for Amberites!"
"New Mayor now!"
The city guardsmen are met by sullen stares in these neighborhoods. The resentment of foreigners being given poer over the natives is palpable. Real anger seethes under the surface of Amber city. Economic decline...locals supplanted in favor of prosperous foreigners...foreign troops marching the streets...they are the conditions that have historically favored revolutions.
Or pogroms.
