The Card: The Devil represents a powerful yet unscrupulous person. It is ambition, temptation, and blind impulse. It is obsession absolute. Strangely enough, it also represents raw strength, hard work, and endurance, as well as fate.

The Character: Paolo is the Emperor of the Patternlands. He holds the "Paolo Line" in check, keeping Amber secure from the rest of shadow...or maybe the other way around. He is perhaps the second most powerful man within the Paolo line, with only Oberon above him. The Devil is a good card for Paolo, because from what I gather he gained at least some of his power by being, well, a devil in more than one senses of the word. Yet, it almost seems that he was destined for this spot, for the power he wields. He is probably one of the least seen yet most powerful player characters in Amber.
