My favorite of Piers Anthony's series, I never tire of reading the newest addition. I have currently read and own all but the most recent book, Yon Ill Wind. Each book has its strong points, but I must admit that the first few have been my favorite. This series is great for all ages. The books are quick to read, full of humor and fantasy. I happen to be a fan of puns and it is amazing to me that Piers can collect pages of puns for each new book. I urge everyone to read at least one book and maybe you'll become as stuck on them as I am. Below are some individual reviews for A Spell for Chameleon, Castle Roogna and Demons Don't Dream.
The first book in the Xanth series, it introduces the first main characters in the land of Xanth. In a land of magic, it has been decreed that no inhabitant can be without magic. Those who are discovered to have no magic are sent to Mundania, a dreary land of no magic. Bink, a seemingly magicless, yong man travels to the Good Magician Humphrey to ask a Question. What is his magic talent? Only able to discover that Bink did have a talent, but not what it was, Bink was exiled anyway. During his exile, he is joined by three young women, all aspects of a single woman, Chameleon. While in Mundania he discovers that an exiled magician named Trent is planning an invasion of Xanth to take the throne from the king. Bink must find a way to save Xanth and find his magic before it is too late.
This is the
third book in the Xanth series and is based on the adventures of Dor, Bink's
twelve year old son. When a lovely ghost is restored to life and wants
to be with her true love, a zombie, Dor embarks on quest to find the elixir
to restore life. In order to do this, he must travel to Xanth's past when
the Castle Roogna was first being built and the Zombie Master lived. His
friends include a giant spider and a young woman whos talent is sex appeal.
In order to complete his task, Dor must convince the Zombie Master to help
King Roogna in his attempt to build a lasting castle and rule. With the
help of centaurs and zombies, they prepare for battle. Join Dor as he fights
harpies, goblins and Mundanes on his quest help a friend without changing
Xanth's history. Learn about the origins of the Gap's forget spell!
One of the later
books, 21st to be precise, Demons Don't Dream was the inspiration
for the Companions of Xanth computer game. In this book, two Mundanes enter
Xanth through a game. Dug and Kim choose a companion to help them solve
their problems through the game, that they eventually learn is really a
battle ground for two powerful demons who wish to run Xanth. As they play
the game, the two learn to believe in magic and its possibilities while
attempting to save Xanth from and invading Demon.
