The Language skill is used to determine whether or not a character understands something in another language (other than Basic, or the language they grew up with). If the character wants to say something in a language in which they are not fluent, it will prove difficult for them. Likewise, understanding a phrase in another language will be a little rough. |
There are two things determined by the ranking of this skill:
I will discuss each item in turn.
This could be severely complicated or quite easy. I'm going to go with the easy option for now, but I would be happy to make it complicated if I need to. Essentially, your rank determines how easily you will understand a language that is not currently in your repertoire of spoken communication. Furthermore, your rank determines little things such as the ability to learn to speak the new language intelligently (if it is physically possible for you to actually speak the language in the first place). All you need to do is match your Language skill rank to its location on the following list to determine how well you can learn new languages (this list aplies to ALL characters, living and mechanical):
This list does not mean that a character with a Language skill rank of 35 cannot learn Ancient Sith (which would rank anywhere from 136-175), it's just a measure of what a person can readily understand when encountering any given language for the first 10-20 times.
Once again, I'll make this easy on all of us. Just match your Language skill rank to its location on the following list to determine how many languages your character can be fluent in. If you do want fluency in a language that you don't have already, send me a note (e-mail link below) and let me know. You won't be fluent in a language until you have the language mentioned on your profile.
You can probably figure out the formula (just follow the rank scale and double the previous number of languages).
The above list does not apply to droids which function as interpreters. Interpreting droids have intense communication modules programmed with a vast quantity of languages and forms of communication. Here is the list to determine how many languages a droid can know.
Of course, even at the lowest place on the list, it will be rare that a droid will encounter a language it does not know. But even C-3PO did not recognize the communication code the Imperial probe droid used on Hoth.
Okay, Get in touch with me if you have any questions. This may be a tad vague, but if I spent all my time writing the guidelines I'd never get to actually participate.
