To look at where it all began for Alpha Flight you must look and Mac
Hudson. It was Mac who working for Am-Can petroleum made the original suit
that could harness electromagnetic energy
which was the prototype for his Guardian suit. When the corporation wanted
to sell the design to the American military Hudson took the cybernetic
helmet which he had made before he worked for Am-Can and destroyed all
his records leaving the suit itself on a hill top outside the Am-Can facility
he returned to Canada with then girlfriend Heather McNeil. The Canadian
military seeing the applications of Hudson's work helped him with his legal
trouble with Am/Can declaring that he had been working for them all along.
They then set Hudson up with his own Department inside the Department of
Defense, Department H (H being for Hudson of course) where he was to seek
out and train super powered beings to protect Canada. It was well on his
honeymoon with Heather that he found his first recruit. In the wilderness
Jimmy and Heather were attacked by a man so feral and animal in nature
that he would later be known as Wolverine. The Hudson's took in Wolverine
and brought him back the humanity that he had lost. With Logan or Weapon
X as he was known as in those days as the leader of his team Mac went on
to recruit parahumans from all over Canada forming the team known as First
Flight. With the mediocre success of First Flight and the departure of
his friend Logan he decided to bring in the tiered system of training that
we know of as Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Flights.
Over the course of the actual title James MacDonald Hudson underwent
an interesting series of adventures that culminated with his death after
a rather vicious fight with Omega Flight and particularly BOX under the
control of Jerome Jaxon Hudson's old boss at Am-Can. Though defeating his
enemy his suit was severely damaged and he was himself injured. At this
unfortunate moment his wife Heather walked into the room and saw what she
thought was her husband blowing up. Of course in the Marvel Universe very
few people actually die and Guardian turned up later actually in league
with Omega Flight as they fought Alpha Flight. He retold the story of how
he had not actually been killed in that explosion but had used his suits
remaining power to create a rift in the space time continuum. He found
himself on the moon Ganymede where he passed out due to the lack of atmosphere
and cold temperature. You'd think he would have died there right? Out on
a frozen moon without any oxygen to breath. Well think again, he was found
by an alien race called the Qwwrrln who not knowing much of human physiology
incorporated his suit mechanisms into himself making him a cyborg. There
was one problem though, not only was Hudson not on Earth but he was also
10 000 years in the past. The Qwwrrln put him into stasis and when he awoke
their civilization had disappeared leaving only a ship to take him to Earth.
Great story huh? Well unfortunately this Guardian was really the android
Delphine Courtney, leader of Omega Flight, seeking revenge on Alpha for
killing her master Jaxon. Unfortunately for Courtney the metal transmutater
Maddison Jeffries is on scene and makes short work of her metal body.
Now you'd think that would be the end of the return of Guardian but you would be wrong. It seems that whole time space story was actually true but the real Hudson was being held in a Roxxon research facility in Denver and not found until two years after his original death. It seems that this Qwwrrln ship had not taken him out of stasis when it got to Earth and so a Roxxon research vessel found him. The new Hudson though was very different then the old. His powers no longer depended on his suit but were a part of him and he had a perfect memory with a computer database for a memory. As you can imagine the new cyborg Guardian or Vindicator as he sometimes went by was fairly distant and rather unemotional. During the 100th issue story line it was revealed that the Qwwrrln had feared the coming of Galactus the devourer of worlds for eons and planned to use Hudson as a secret weapon if he ever did show up to eat their home planet (Ganymede was just an outpost). So while Toronto was under interstellar attack all of the sudden James teleport half of Alpha Flight and the Avengers to this planet where they actually manage to defeat Galactus. Now the return appears to kill Hudson but of course he isn't dead. This guy just doesn't ever die.
Recently it was implied that Hudson had somehow been deaged so that he is now 19 and has
been implanted with his old memories by a more sinister Department H. He
no longer has the cyborg implants but is still fairly distant from Heather
who was still technically his wife. Of course this wasn't the real Mac though but some sort of clone or whatnot that died horribly. Shame, really it was. The real Mac returned near the end of the second series though Heather was no longer so hot to trot for either of them.
