In Swahili the name of Uhura, a striking black woman, translates to 'freedom,' and she speaks that language fluently. She also has a singing voice and was known to entertain members of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew, accompanying herself on the Vulcan harp. Uhura has shown some romantic interest in Scotty, but it was never pursued. After her memory was wiped in 2267 by the space probe Nomad, Uhura spent considerable time relearning the huge pieces of information the probe had destroyed.

Uhura served at Starfleet Command on Earth after the reassignment of the original U.S.S. Enterprise to Starfleet Academy in 2284, where part of her duty was to give lectures. During this time, she was temporarily assigned to the experimental transwarp drive ship, the USS Marco Polo.

Dr. Christine Chapel

Former head nurse onboard the USS Enterprise and that ship's surgeon under Captain Will Decker (Jr.). She is the chief Medical Officer onboard the USS Marco Polo. She is also a qualified science officer and is on temporary assignment from the Starfleet Medical Academy. Holds Starfleet rank of commander.

Christine Chapel searched for her lost fiance, Dr. Roger Korby, who had been missing for five
years, ever since his last communication on Exo III. When Korby was found on Exo III in 2266
and subsequently discovered to be an android, Chapel elected to remain with the starship,
where she became good friends with Uhura and a good friend to Dr. McCoy.

Emotionally, her early shipboard life, as admitted when infected with the Psi 2000 virus, was
marked by an acknowledged unrequited love for Spock - a ongoing issue which never interfered
with her professional duties. Upon completion of the five-year mission she finished her own
medical degree and was slated by 2270 to be CMO on the refit U.S.S. Enterprise under Will
Decker.

Some 15 years later, Chapel had won commander's bars by the time she oversaw responses to the
whale-song aliens' "invasion" as director of Starfleet Emergency Operations. Shortly
thereafter, she had contacted Sarek about speaking on Kirk's behalf during his inquiry before
the Federation Council for theft and disobeying direct orders related to the Genesis device
and rescue of Spock's body and "katra."

Commander Jonathan Greyhawk

First Officer of the USS Marco Polo. Security officer of the USS Potemkin. Posted to Neutral Zone prior to USS Marco Polo. As First Officer he fulfills dual roles as the head of ship security and commander of the First Contact Team (FCT) troops. Amerindian from the Sioux tribe.

This is his first assignment from Starfleet Academy. Like many people on his home planet of Kumasi, he prefers being addressed by his last name only. On the planet Kumasi, the dominant race is dark-skinned, and only since their acceptance into the Federation, have their tolerance of non-dark-skinned people increased.

An excellent helmsman/navigator, T'Challa was in Star Fleet Academy when the USS Enterprise was attached by Khan, and was onboard the craft on a training mission when it occurred. His expertise and recommendations by Captain Spock, secured him a place on the USS Marco Polo.
