The movie opens to a clinically insane Neill and then regresses to what brings him to the padded cell. Neill is hired to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a famous horror writer...a horror writer who's fans have odd symptom after reading his books such as paranoia, physical deformations, etc. Neill goes to the town that the books are founded after only to find that the city he is residing in is completely fictional, and all actions done by the people in the town (including his town) are controlled by the sadistic horror writer.
This movie is arguably Carpenter's best ever, if simply because of the perpetual weirdness the movie generates. The ending can be a disappointment for some because of the obscurity it projects. For me it was perfect because it leaves you wanting more (though a sequel would be out of the question). Neill was absoultely wonderful in the role (and his fine acting ability is truly projected at the end). This is indeed a must see for any John Carpenter fans!!!!!!
