HOW THE LETTERING WAS DONE FOR THE TALES FROM THE CRYPT COMIC BOOKS
By far the most often question I get from Tales afincados is about how the lettering was done with the comic books. Those who pay very close attention to the books realize that in the later issues of all EC Comics, the lettering changes drastically. Here is once and for all why this happened.
In old EC Comics day, they used The Leroy Mechanical System for lettering. As explained in Digby Diehl's excellent book Tales From the Crypt: The Official Archives, this letering was chosen for two reasons: 1) it gave uniformity to the magazines and 2)Bill Gaines, the owner of EC Comics inherited it from his father (an interesting tidbit I got from this book. While Bill's father owned EC Comics, he also did work on Wonder Woman comics....using this very lettering system).
When EC Comics was surely a success, the choice was made to go over to hand lettering. This desicion as made mostly because it allowed a more "rough around the edges feel" and allowed for greater emphasis.
