![]() The Games of Saberhaven Brego vs. Niwt
|
The audience members talk among themselves, with a few intermittent whistles and shouts, as they wait for the next fight to begin. This competition is between two thoroughly wicked warriors: Brego, an elven grandmaster swordsman, and Niwt, a human woodsman and priest. Niwt is favored to win this competition not only because of his greater experience, but also because of the blessings of his dark gods, which are expected to be sufficient to counteract Brego's superior swordsmanship. As the doors open, the crowd's chatter shrinks to a murmur. Both fighters step out in fine chainmail armor, Brego also carrying a shield on one arm. In his other hand, Brego holds Deathgiver, an enchanted longsword with a variety of mystical powers which should serve to make the elf more deadly. Niwt carries a longsword in his right hand and a shortsword in his left; both are known to be lethally enchanted. Niwt also wears a huge belt across his waist, the enormous buckle of which covers much of his abdomen, and bulky leather gauntlets which nevertheless grip his swords firmly. Niwt begins to jog forward at a careful pace, and Brego starts forward as well - but after only seconds, Brego disappears from view. Noticing this, Niwt stops in his tracks, and holding his swords up defensively, he gazes around the arena. Brego, however, is nowhere to be seen. A couple of minutes go by in this manner, until suddenly the elf appears about fifty feet away and slightly to the left of Niwt, pointing Deathgiver at the forester and shouting "Freeze!" A cone of frost shoots forth from the weapon, surrounding Niwt and coating him in ice crystals. The evil priest just shakes off the effects though, seemingly unfazed. With this the melee begins, and both opponents charge at each other. They meet in mere seconds, swords flashing. Niwt's longsword catches on Brego's shield and bends nearly to the point of breaking, but springs back into shape; meanwhile, his shortsword sweeps low to catch Brego's foot, cutting deep. The elf likewise slashes into Niwt, stabbing through the mail to give the man a fierce wound on his left chest. Each man spins to face the other, and again a blinding flurry of sword strokes rings through the arena. Niwt manages to get in an attack with each weapon first, stabbing his longsword completely through Brego's thigh, and slashing him again with the shortsword across the elf's elbow, just behind the edge of his shield. Brego, bloodied and limping, weakly attempts a response, but trips over his own feet, and swings wildly into the air. Niwt, having a clear attack at the elf's flank, hamstrings Brego on both legs, and puts a quick end to the fight.
