The Games of Saberhaven
Jerin Xalvix yi Et'rius v. Archie

The crowd is restless waiting for the beginning of the next fight. The combat is between two grey elves, one archer and one mage, and the audience is hoping that Jerin Xalvix yi Et'rius' unusual magical style and strange spells will liven up what promises to be a long-range, distance battle. Archie the bowmaster has a good record, based mainly on keeping out of harm's way and raining magical missiles down on opponents from afar. There is little doubt that he will attempt the same strategy today.
The doors open, and unsurprisingly Archie flies out from his entrance on his winged boots, an arrow nocked and ready. Jerin barely puts one foot into the arena before shouting a command word, causing a two-foot long shard of stone to fly across the arena at the other elf. Archie manages to stretch sideways, taking the bolt in the left flank rather than the center of his chest, but blood flows freely from the wound and the flying archer is knocked off-balance. He spends nearly a minute trying to get his winged feet back underneath him, as Jerin runs to close the gap, so that he can use some of his close-range spells.
Jerin shouts a word of power just as Archie redraws his bow. The archer seems unaffected, however, and launches one arrow after another - four in all - at the unarmored mage. The missiles pound into the wizard despite his sorcerous wards, and bring him bloodily to the dusty floor of the arena.
The audience, unhappy at being denied any spectacular magical effects, half-heartedly boos at the victor, earning a rude gesture from Archie. Meanwhile, the healing clerics come trotting out to aid the unconscious wizard.
