Wise
Readers wanted!! Are you a wise reader? If you are intelligent
and committed person in touch with your thoughts who likes to read, then
you certainly can be. A Wise Reader is someone who notices
their own process of reading in order to provide detailed and accurate
feedback on the experience of reading a given manuscript. To be a
Wise Reader, one does not have to be trained in literature. In fact,
it is better that they are not trained in literature. Wise Reader's provide feedback on what I have written and not advice on what
I should
do next. Typical responses on something written are "it is good"
or "I liked it." By themselves, these are about as useful as trying
to use a kite to para-sail. However, feedback on the experience of
reading lets me know if the reader is presented with the information that
I want to get across. Will readers find interesting, that which I
wish them too? Will they be shocked or surprised by what I intend to shock
or surprise them. It is difficult to gauge how readers will respond. Feedback from
Wise Reader's will let me know
if I am on target or way off the mark.
"Notices their
own process of reading?" What that means is that as you read something
you pay attention to your reactions. If this is something that you
do not already do then keeping the following questions in mind as you read
could develop that ability.
Were you ever
bored or find your mind wandering?
Was there anything
that you didn't understand? What?
Is there anything
that you had to read twice?
Is there any
place where you became confused?
Was there anything
you didn't believe?
Did you have
any strong reactions to what you have read as a whole or in any part(s)?
What sticks
out in your mind most about what you have read?
These sort of
questions can lead to getting in touch with your process of reading.
The kind of feedback that you could provide as a result will help me to
sharpen my skills as a writer. The thing to know and keep in mind
is that you can never be wrong. You feel how you feel about what
you read.
