  MALIGNER'S GAS : Doing a favor for a friend while on leave,  Scott Lamouthe finds himself in the backwoods of Ord where dangerous forms of fuel are still in use.  After settling a local dispute Scott eats at a "chop house."  There, an Astronomer named Santiago catches up to him.  He translates for him a tale from an aged Ekaii man.  The tale is of the first trip by the people of Ord to its inner-atmospheric moon.  It tells the tale of how the moon of Ord, Stillwell, became inhabited.  He remained in the chop house, after Santiago and his party had left, to reflect over the story and consider writing it out.  While in this chop house he becomes a victim in an accident involving Protomethane, "Maligner's Gas."

THE ORIGIN OF EXTINCTION : The Astronomer Santiago came to Ord to investigate the phenomena of the Inner-atmospheric Moon.  His theories lead him to believe that a local gravatic event of major proportions caused this phenomena.  Soon after he located the Rift in space near Ord.  He knew it to be his gravatic event.  When he announced his discovery the communications network went crazy but no one could get through the Affiliate net thrown up over the area.  Scientists, astronomers, linguists, clergymen, and Maskullan spies from all over the galaxy flocked to this area of space.  Scott Lamouthe was on hand being the only linguists in the system with the security clearance and knowledge of the written language of the Ekaii.  Atad was on hand also, openly revealing himself for the first time in thousands of years.  Before the scientific, linguistic, religious, and military eyes of the macroverse, Scott deciphers the words and Atad explains what men were not meant to know.  "The Origin of Extinction."

SUMMARY, WEATHER FRIENDS : Gevan Michel is a man on the planet Ord which is the affiliate center of its Star System.  It is a planet that doesn't know the fall of rain.  Gevan has emotional control of Ord's weather.  His presence on the planet threatens the balance of life there.  He unwittingly brings about disaster on a world not inured to the ravages of rainfall.  Erosion, mud slides, and damage to the delicate irragas-based ecosystem all result from his presence on Ord.  Scott Lamouthe is the only person who knows of Gevan's affect on the world.  He is confronted with the choice of somehow removing him from the planet or killing him.

SUMMARY, WENDY : A wind generator mechanic in the medcenter of Ord falls hopelessly in love with the wind.  He speaks to her daily and she comes alive for him and him alone.  Her physical manifestation causes the wind to cease on the whole of the planet.  She speaks every language on the planet and knows just about everything that happened throughout the whole world.  This is also a story that provides a glimpse of the Grand Scheme through the mind of Scott Lamouthe in delirious Maligner's gas induced state of higher conciseness.
