Moroder version (reported as 87-minute version, but actually has just 80 minutes of movie scenes). In our opinion this is the best version (I have yet to watch the new Kino version), but it is out of print. This one was bought in Australia many years ago. You may ask: "Why Moroder's version, despite being one of the most complete versions, is the shortest of all?" You will find the answer here. Warning: The 139-minute B&W version (the worst version of all, in our opinion) was once being sold with a cover that was almost identical to the one of Moroder's version! Not satisfied is saying that their version is "the longest available" (actually it is one of the most incomplete versions - it is just played at very low speed), they now have added a "false" color cover to it! Where are the laws that protect consumers against this kind of things??? |

139-minute B&W version published by JEF films. The cover says it is a "newly restored version", but image quality is so bad that we would rather call it "newly destroyed version". It has actually more missing scenes than both Kino's and Moroder's versions, but runs longer because of slower frame speed. In order to find further details about this version, please visit this specific page. |

The same horrible 139-minute version, as released in Brazil (again I remind: despite the cover, it is B&W). This same version, when released in the UK by Eureka, had a cover almost identical to Moroder's version. |

The 90-minute B&W release by "Kino on Video" has all the scenes found in the 139-minute version, but played in a more natural speed. Image quality is good. In our opinion, the main problem of this version is the soundtrack. We would like to thank Claes Ljunghorn for sending us this tape. |

The release by "Madacy Entertainment" has a running time of 114 minutes. It was reported that image quality is bad and that the soundtrack is not related to the scenes. Lacks many scenes found in Moroder's release, but is still more complete than JEF/Eureka's 139-minute version. In order to find further details about this version, please visit this specific page. See another cover of Madacy version. |

This Good Times version is the worst of all. Horrible image quality - specially at the final images. And there is simply no sound - nothing! This version is not worth even for free. We think that laws should be applicable against such releases. Unfortunately, this tape is sold even at some trustable on-line stores... The golden rule we have found is: "a version costing less than US$ 20 is probably not worth buying even for US$ 1". |

This version was released by a company called Vestron, which is now defunct. Catalog number is VL5090. The cover's image was kindly sent by Mike Dunn. |

Import Laserdisc with 90-minute B&W version, HI-FI mono. Music is only a piano with no relation to movie scenes. Image quality is very bad. Catalogue number is IVCL-1011S. Warning:: Despite it has written "Giorgio Moroder présente" (see detail) and therefore it has been sold as "Moroder's version" by some on-line Video Stores, BE CAREFUL: this is NOT Moroder's version !!! |

The new 2002 digital restoration by Kino International can already be ordered at their site and from Amazon. The same version has also been released by Eureka and by other companies, depending on country / DVD region. Note: Eureka, which is now selling this restored version, once sold another DVD - if you are buying an used DVD, be careful not to buy the older one! |

DVD as released by Madacy. See some comments about it, as sent by David M. Arnold. Note: many people reported the image quality of this DVD to be disappointing! |

A third version of Metropolis in DVD was produced by Films sans Frontieres. |

A fourth version of Metropolis in DVD was produced by CMH/Xoom.

A fifth version of Metropolis in DVD was produced by Eureka Video. Since they say the running time is 139 minutes, we think this is the equivalent to the JEF version.

The only versions I would recommend would be those restored by Giorgio Moroder (which is out of print)
and the latest digital restoration, which is being sold by
Kino International and by Amazon.
