Carl Arthur Smith, Sr.
1921-1999

This is my grandfather, Carl Arthur Smith, Sr. He lived in Pulaski, Virginia. He was known by his grandchildren as "Pa Pa", and he was known by everyone else as a wonderful husband, father, patriot, and friend. We are all blessed by his memory.
Born in 1921 in Augusta County, he was the son of Dorsey and Lucinda Smith. He held the rank of a Master Sargeant in the United States Army. He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, and fought in the jungles of Luzon, Philippine Islands in the 129th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Presidential Citation from the Republic of the Philippines in honor of the Philippine Liberation Campaign, 1944-1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. After World War II, Carl joined the Virginia National Guard, where he served for 32 years. He was a management specialist in contract administration for the Department of the Army, Radford Arsenal (RAAP), and retired after 36 years of service.
He had a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. For more information about the latest research about the disease, visit the National Parkinson Foundation on the web.
