DM
The Band arrives outside the tower to find the drawbridge down. They note that there is a moat around the tower that there was not the last time the Band was in Hasbis. The guards smile and wave the band through.
"They are upstairs." Speaks on burly guardsmen.
"They asked us to send you right up when you arrived."
The band talks quickly with the guards. (If you want to that is). And then head up and finally enter the great hall. Inside is Nebious a slender older man. He smiles as the group enters.
"Welcome to my tower."
VORIAX
Voriax approaches Nebious with a large smile on his face.
"Nebious! Well met! My eyes are glad to be able to see you once again. We nearly didn't make it back this time. We have acquired some new party members that seem to be stout companions (Voriax will introduce the newbies :-) ). I know that there are some troubling times for you and Lord Doth here, but we have some questions for you when/if you get some spare time. As for me, I'm just glad to be in your tower where it's relatively safe."
DM
Nebious smiles.
"Welcome members of the Silver Blade. Your Band of stout hearted adventurers is always welcome here in Hasbis."
He snaps his finger and a glass decanter appears in mid air. It floats over to a set of glasses and begins to pour.
"Some fine elven wine from Los Vain to quench your thirsts?"
He picks one of the filled goblets up and sips from it.
"So what questions do you have of me Voriax?"
VORIAX
"Well, without overwhelming you at once, I have this staff with a magical inscription on it. I can read it, but have not figured out exactly what it means. Have you heard of anything like 'The power that persists?' Oh, and do you have any blank spellbooks available that I could purchase? I have come across some spells that I am VERY anxious to understand and need to copy them down to study. Does anyone else have a magical item that Nebious could quickly examine? He has a knack for understanding the nature of magical things very efficiently."
ALOF
When Voriax asks for the items, I walk up and place the ring on the table.
DM
Nebious nods.
"I have some blank spellbooks with 100 pages in them. I will sell them for say 300 gold each. As for this staff..."
He picks it up and looks at it carefully.
"Where did you get this?"
He waits for a response before proceeding. He glances at the ring held up by the hobbit.
"And where did you come by that little trinket my friend?"
ALOF
The one I found in the maze so long ago... (Unless I gave it to someone)
"Well, Sir Nebious I am not exactly sure where I was although I believe I found it in what is known as the maze of the Mad mage. After finding it I found my way to a place called Waterdeep."
VORIAX
"I will take two spellbooks. I know not when I could get such an offer again. This staff came from (Red Mage's tower? Someone help me out here. Wherever it came from, I will tell Nebious the truth)..."
DM
Nebious nods.
"I see, you found this staff in a cave with a giant Lizard... Somewhere under the sea...How interesting."
He examines it further.
"It is a staff of power. That much I can tell. Its exact powers will take much work to discover... but it is an item of power... that much I can tell you. The Power the persists is sometimes what elves and mages call Magic."
He looks at the Ring.
"This ring is a ring of some power... Notice the Fae runes on the inside. They are very hard to see... I will have to examine it in my lab. But I think it could be some sort of ring of protection or perhaps something to do with water."
VORIAX
"My thanks Nebious. I've waited this long to figure out exactly what it is capable of, but I will have to wait a little longer though it seems. I will have to attempt to identify it at first opportunity. Unfortunately, it sounds like there is a problem of the undead wandering around that we need to attend to first."
DM
Nebious nods.
"Fair enough, good Voriax. "
LEGILDUR
Legildur, who was sitting back while quietly sipping the elven wine and remembering times from long ago, looks at Voriax when he states the origin of the staff.
"Nay, Voriax," says Legildur as he steps in to assist his friend.
"The staff was found in the cave on the Sunless Sea, along with the broad sword that Kinson now carries and my kite shield - both of which Nebious has already seen a week ago..."
He trails off as he remembers the time difference between them all.
TIMOR
Timor nods in greeting to the Lord archmage of Hasbis.
"Good to see you again, too."
The brown eyed priest is of course assuming that Lord Doth
explained their sudden 'appearance', hence, Lord Nebious' lack of
surprise is understandable.
Timor remains silent for a few moments to let the others speak,
especially Voriax who seems to idolise the archmage in some grand way.
When Voriax mentions his staff, and Saggar mentions Waterdeep, Timor
suddenly remembers a couple things as well. When he has a chance to
speak (i.e., he doesn't want to talk while others are talking as that would be rude :), Timor asks Nebius.
"Speaking of 'Waterdeep', Nebious, have you ever heard of this place Waterdeep or Moon Sea for that matter? See, we found a letter, invitation of sorts, amongst the belongings of some people who were obviously working against us. In that invitation, these strange places were mentions - must be from far across an ocean - but the place may be of interest to us if it is n fact the origin of the people who want to see us stopped."
Timor whips out the invitation to the ball that was picked off from one of the evil priests encountered in the tunnels.
(after Nebious has had a chance to respond)
"And what of this cloak?" he says, holding up the side of the red cloak he wears.
"We picked these cloaks from those same folk I mentioned earlier, but this red one was being worn by their leader of sorts. If it carries some rank or prestige, then perhaps you might know something about it?"
(again, after Nebious has had a chance to respond)
"Hmm, and have you had a chance to look at the herbs I left with Lord
Doth for you? As I told him, they were being carried by a man prepared for battle and war, so I highly doubt they are common seasoning spices."
(and, once again, after Nebious has had a chance to respond)
"I had not thought of this before until Voriax here just mentioned staves... I picked this metallic one up from Zandor's tower long ago... perhaps it might be of interest to see if Zandor had an enchantment placed upon it. For it just now occurred to me how unlikely it is that he would have just a common staff laying around give the power he seems to be obsessed with - then again, it was just in a storage room... so one can never be sure."
(again, after receiving a response)
"Lord Nebious, might you know where I can find Lord Doth?"
After receiving his answers, Timor will let the others continue to speak with Nebious - he has to speak with Lord Doth one more time this morning as per their agreement the night before.
OOC:
Please note that for all of the above (except for the staff question) Timor isn't directly asking for Nebious to check for magical enchantments, the priest is merely asking if Nebious is in any way familiar with the items or their origin or if there is anything of interest Nebious may be able to discern (if they are magical, Timor wouldn't mind knowing - just, Timor isn't asking with the assumption that they are magical)
Sean, you did NOT get the staff from the red mage's tower as Charles subtly pointed out. But you did remind me of when Timor got his staff from the red mage's tower. In fact, he got it during my first week of playing in Artisc. His wooden staff broke while fighting one of the guards so he grabbed that from the mage's storage room to use for defence. And now that I think about it, he probably got the staff one or two posts before meeting you and the rest of the Band. It was weird going back to Zandor's tower (the red mage) - I kept thinking, 'gee, it all goes in a full circle' ;)
Hmm, who else was with me - there was Sylvan (who used a magical creature to send me there to help him escape), Arken (the mage who died within 2 posts as he never responded except once), and one other I think whose name I don't quite recall at the moment...
Hey John - I was just thinking about how the 3 year time travel affected our various characters' background story. I was trying to think of how it would have effected Max's, but I don't recall all the details of what Max's story was - it had something to do with his teacher (the former Asgan court mage) being murdered by the new court mage and that it was the current mage (your teacher's murderer) who was irking on the war efforts against Los Vain or something. Is that right? If that is right, then something must have happened with him because the war is supposedly over...
MAXIMILLION
OOC:
Yes the Necromancer was became the advisor to the King of Asga killed my master Avador. My character has many questions as to what happen to the Necromancer and who is the King or Queen of Asga now. Both Sir Kinson and I would have reasons for returning to Asga depending on the circumstances.
DM
He shakes his head.
"No not that I can recall... My master once spoke of a man by the name of Blackstaff... Yes he was from some place called Waterdeep."
Nebious smiles.
"You are full of questions are you not good Timor. The herbs seem to be used in healing and the cloak I have never seen its like before. It does not seem out of the ordinary to me."
Nebious smiles.
"The staff seems normal enough to me. I detect nothing magical or unusual about it. But perhaps I am overlooking something. I would be glad to take a closer look at it. As for Lord Doth he is up stares resting. He was up until late last night."
TIMOR
Timor smiles in return.
"Aye, I know I did keep him up late. he had asked me to meet with him this morning specifically, but I will let him continue his rest."
LEGILDUR
Legildur patiently waits for the others to finish with Nebious, smiling to himself as the mage is bombarded with questions from the Band. Sipping his elven wine quietly, Legildur enjoys the taste of his homeland and shuts out the noise around him. Finally finishing the wine, Legildur sighs to himself and stands up and approaches Nebious. Fishing out numerous items from his backpack (which is empty except for the items of real interest) the elven warrior
presents them to Nebious for examination.
"Nebious, I have collected many a strange thing over the last week and I haven't the knowledge to know if they be important or not," he says.
Legildur passes the items to Nebious one at a time so as to give the mage time to examine each piece individually. The pieces are:
==From the priests:
A finger in a glass jar
A shrunken head
A silver spoon (engraved with the letter 'P')
A ceremonial dagger of life stealing
A vial of clear liquid (1 of 8 found in the packs of the priests)
==From a room that held 5 orcs:
A vial of blue liquid (1 of 5 or 6) (it may be a stoppered iron flask)
==From the ogre:
A piece of fur
==From the elven messenger:
A long sword silver chain with swan ornament
OOC:
Others: Don't forget the steel spear (Biladoc), the dancing shortsword (Alof), the ring (Max), and a flask of bright blue liquid (Kaddar). The battle with the 5 orcs in the first room: We got the 'sceptic' card from there and a jar of black paste - who is carrying those?
DM
Nebious looks through the items that Legildur has brought to him.
"The Blue potion are potions of healing." He says as he smells them.
"You can smell the copper and rose extract in them. The Silver Spoon is magical but I can tell little else at the moment. The clear vials are water...perhaps them have some sort of special nature. The dagger is magical and seems old and powerful. But it would take more study to know more. "
BILADOC
After breakfast and getting some new clothes, I'll walk with the others to Lord Doth's castle, curiously looking at the houses and people around, glad to be once again in the sunshine.
When we meet Nebius and he produces the glass decanter, I take a glass of wine and drink it, gently tapping the decanter to make sure it's real.
I look at Nebius and ask him:
"That was great! Do you think I could learn how to do it? It sure would have come in handy when we were in that maze..."
When the others start to show him the items they are carrying, I start rummaging in my backpack and take out:
==Found in the maze:
- shards from the crystal in the dancing swoord's pommel;
- steel spear with blue radiance;
- card with the "sceptic" (with the numbers 338 and 666) hum... ATM card maybe?... ;-);
- dagger (found together with the axe and scceptre in the dwarf's
coffin);
==Taken in the sewers and the inn of Pensula:
- staff (carried by Kaddar)
- gold broach
- gold circlet
- mace
- map taken from the thief (mentioning Lake Venir and Ruins of Alkir).
I wait for Nebius to examine them and see if they have any special
characteristics. I say to Kinson and Saggar:
"Let him take a look at the axe and sceptre we found in the coffin."
DM
He smiles at Biladoc.
"That trick took me many years to learn, my friend."
He looks at the items present to him by Biladoc and picks them up one by one.
"The mace seems unusual but I am unsure if it is magical. The gold brooch seems to have some properties. I should take a closer look at it. It looks like it is of elven construction. The crystal shards seem to have had some magical power at one time. The spear is magical and has some interesting runes on it. It says Back Guarder. The dagger found on the dwarf's chest is quite old. The card is most interesting and I would like to study it more."
KADDAR
Kaddar waits, as he enjoys the wine, he listens to Voriax and others and waits for a proper chance to speak.
He takes a good look at the place and at Lord Nebious, quietly, as Legildur talks to Nebious and approaches he notices Legildur looks and figures out it's his time to speak, so he starts...
"Well met Lord Nebious, let me introduce myself my name is Kaddar and I am at your service I do have a little knowledge about the power or magic, I thank you for your kindness and your time as you might be busy enough under the current circumstances to be asking so many questions, I was held captive by evil drows and managed to escape from them, somehow ended at the Maze, when this fine gentlemen find me and I agree to join them, they gave me this staff, but they
are unsure of their nature or power...could it hide some magical powers ?"
Then he continues...
"At the maze we find this potion, but we are unaware of its possible effect."
He extracts the unidentified potion he has been carrying (a flask of bright blue liquid).
As Kaddar says this and awaits Nebious answers, a number of questions come to his mind... but he awaits Nebious answers regarding so many items.
DM
Nebious nods.
"Kaddar, it is a pleasure to meet you. That Bright blue flash is a potion of healing. More powerful than he others I already talked about. The fact that drow captured you is very interesting to me. I had heard they where still around but I have not spoken to anyone who has actually seen them and lived. "
TIMOR
Timor sighs.
"Voriax is correct though he doesn't realise it."
The brown eyed priest looks around to the others then brings his gaze back to the archmage.
"We are being somewhat selfish here bombarding you with questions when in fact there is a more serious threat pending upon the people of Hasbis. Perhaps we should just leave the items in your care for the time being, listen to what information you may be able to share on the subject (the subject of the attacking undead masses), and then let you look more closely at our items at your leisure..."
DM
Nebious shakes his head.
"It is true that I like to keep to myself sometimes. But I miss the open road. I enjoy talking to you and looking at the many strange and wondrous items you bring to me. But what I like even more is listening to your stories of far away places and the dangers you have faced..."
A wistful look comes to his eyes.
"I do miss that."
TIMOR
Timor watches the archmage longingly speak of his adventurous youth.
"Perhaps you should consider having your own such adventure when the
safety of Hasbis is more stable - it could even become a learning
experience for your apprentice(s)... Or, along those same lines, if you were interested in joining us while we searched for the cause of these undead masses, I am sure no one in the group would object to your company."
LEGILDUR
Legildur looks around to the priest.
"Aye, you be right about the serious threat," says the elven warrior.
"But don't forget that these items may help us against the undead. I'd rather we went chasing undead fully prepared. Besides, Nebious' initial examination may give us enough information to judge whether the item is useful and whether it merits a more detailed identification. And the more you disturb him, the longer it will take." he adds with a grin.
DM
Nebious nods.
"I would love to go with you. But I must make sure the town is safe. The attacks have been growing stronger. And I am not sure if a large attack comes that people would not be killed if I where not here. "
LEGILDUR
Legildur suddenly remembers something important as Nebious continues to examine the Band's treasure.
"Excuse me Nebious," says Legildur.
"I've just remembered someone important!" he exclaims.
"Selander, come over here please," he asks of the girl.
"Nebious, this is a young girl we saved from some dark sacrificial ceremony in the Maze. We killed the priests involved. That's where I got the dagger from." he says pointing to the wavy bladed knife in Nebious' hands.
"Anyway, maybe you can help her. She doesn't speak and we don't know anything about her. Maybe you can work something out?"
DM
He glances at her in her new cloths.
"She seems quite strong. Is she a warrior?"
She shakes her head but then points at Legildur and nods.
LEGILDUR
Legildur thinks for a moment after Selander answers Nebious in her silent way. Shrugging his shoulders he says:
"See what I mean. We need be able to communicate to see what she wants and or even who she is. She means well enough, but she lacks the skills to survive travelling with the likes of us."
"Your news about the potions of healing is welcome," says the elven warrior.
"As for the other items, perhaps we'd best leave them with you to examine at your leisure and come back another time?
I'd appreciate your views on the ceremonial knife - it has left two wounds in me that cannot be healed. Both the priests and I are at a loss about how to heal them. We were thinking that perhaps you could discern something about the knife that may allow them to be healed?" he says almost pleadingly.
OOC:
Assuming Nebious agrees, can everyone send me a list of what they wish to leave with Nebious for him to examine? Please include a brief description of the item, who owns it and where and when it was found. I'll forward it to Charles so it is easier to keep track of.
DM
Nebious nods.
"I doubt I can find a way to heal you. But I may be able to find out more about the dagger. As for Selander she seems take with things you do. If she is not a warrior nor has any other skills...Perhaps she wants to be like you."
Selander nods her head strongly and smiles.
LEGILDUR
Legildur nods slightly at Nebious' words about the dagger. As much as he expected. Pushing the mail coif off the back of his head, Legildur runs his fingers though his blonde hair in what would appear to be frustration.
As the mage continues, the elf switches his focus back to Selander. Sighing slightly he thinks for a while as Nebious turns his attention back to the treasure placed before him.
"Selander," Legildur calls to the mute woman. "Is that so, you wish to be a warrior?"
Assuming she nods, Legildur continues.
"I am honoured that you wish to follow my footsteps. You have a taste of what life as a warrior is like, so I cannot dissuade using tales of horror and sorrow. You know now that we will soon seek the source of the undead?" he asks of her.
"This is a dangerous task. Your current lack of skills cannot be overcome quickly with sheer enthusiasm. Look at those around you. We have all spent years learning our trades before embarking on a life of adventure. I myself served numerous years as a soldier in the forces of Los Vain and with The White Falcons mercenary group. This grounding is what keeps me alive in the cut and thrust of close battle.
I suggest that you allow me to have a word with Lord Doth and see if he will take you on to train. He is my better with the sword and has much to teach. Maybe you could then work in the castle guard until such time as your skills grow? While here, maybe Nebious could divine a way to restore your voice. The ability to communicate is important in battle as teamwork makes the difference over individual skills."
Legildur sighs to himself before continuing:
"Selander, what I am really saying is that I'd fear for your safety if you travelled with us and I lack the time to teach you swordcraft properly. Please consider my suggestion for training with Lord Doth - a better teacher you could not find.
What say you, will you stay here?"
DM
She nods her head that she wishes to be a warrior. She looks sad as Legildur talks to her more and more. She nods in agreement though she does not look happy about it.
LEGILDUR
Legildur notes the look of disappointment on the girl's face.
"In time to come you will see the wisdom of what I say," says the elf.
DM
She nods again but does not seem happy.
BILADOC
In Dirk's shop, I'll spend another 10 g.p. on a pair of clean shirts, new dark brown leather trousers, a new dark grey cloak with a hood, with the inside in brown, so I can reverse it depending on the surrounding colours. I'll ask Dirk to mend the cuts on my leather armour, too.
With Nebius, I leave all the stuff I showed him and say:
"We have some things to take care in town, like getting some weapons and clothes... We can come back later on, after you have a chance to examine all these items and tell you all about our exploits in that maze."
I go through my back pack and leave on Nebious' table the following:
- ornate basket hilted dagger worked into a wyvern hunting scene, with chips of chalcedony, moss agate, chrysoprase, opal and amethyst inset as eyes of prey, various leaping pegasi, and their riders.(I was carrying this, Saggar got the axe and Kinson the sceptre)
- gold circlet from the priest we killed in Pensula's sewers
- gold broach from the same priest
- my mace, also taken after the fight in thee sewers (I'll be able to take care of any trouble with my daggers and shortswords)
- shards from the crystal in the dancing swoord's pommel
- steel spear with blue radiance
- card with the "sceptic" (with the numbers 338 and 666)
- map taken from the thief killed in the Greeen Dragon Inn
- scattermen and ball found in the maze (Nebbius might like to play with them...)
;-)
(It might be a good idea for Kaddar to leave his staff there. The priest used it against Grumach and it burned him when he got hit...)
I stand up and take a deep breath:
"Man, I feel sooo light..."
DM
Dirk smiles as he takes your leather armour and begins mending it on the spot.
"I hope you enjoy your new cloths sir hobbit. I shall have this armour mended in an hour or so."
Nebius looks over the objects and examines them.
- Mace is Magical +1, +2 vs. trolls
- Dagger is only good craftsmanship no magicc
- He likes the scattermen.
- The steel spear is magical... He can tell it is at least +2 but some of its properties keep him from identifying it further. Something that seems to disturb him.
- The gold broach and the shards, and the caard he can find nothing magical about them. He seems interested in the card but is unable to tell you anything about it.
- The Gold Circlet seems to offer some sort of protective magic (+1 AC)
VORIAX
"Nebious, I will leave this staff with you for now. Mayhaps when we get back I will have more time to assist you in studying it. I have a feeling that given time, I could discern at least some of its powers."
DM
Nebious nods.
"Hopefully I will be able to do so."
SAGGAR
I think I had held onto the sceptre and axe, Saggar will see if the mage can examine them
DM
The Axe is +2 Axe of Returning, the sceptre is not magical.
KADDAR
While the party gathers the items that will be left to Nebious, Kaddar talks...
"My Lord, if you like the stories and you are interested about the evil drows, let me tell you that they are still around and that they have powerful mages among them, I, myself was kept captive by them in a cage just like a beast in some place underground and along with me there were many other prisoners, all of them in cages. From time to time, a powerful male drow, who seemed to be one of their leaders, used to visit me, and he seemed to enjoy showing me his many powers. When I was captured I was near Asga, looking for a mage called Rastan Goldgleam, who is rumoured to live in a crystal tower on the woods."
DM
Nebious nods.
"Rastan... Yes... I have met him before... An Elf of some skill."
TIMOR
Upon hearing this last comment, Timor's jaw drops. The brown eyed priest stares at Kaddar for a moment, but, when realising he was staring, he tries to regain his composure - Now is not the time to bring this up, they have many other things to attend to right now and he can't be everywhere at once - but knowing that mass numbers of people are trapped in cages somewhere just breaks his heart...
KINSON
While listening to other party members hand over their treasure to
Nebious for inspection, a sudden look of surprise comes over Kinson's
face.
"Oh my lord!"
He immediately takes off his backpack, and begins digging through it.
"I was wondering why this thing was so heavy." He pulls out a large
wrapped bundle. He unwraps the bundle revealing its contents:
- A small locked chest made of metal with a padlock.
- Two robes with horned skulls on them. The robes are black with crimson.
- A small wooden box, with two scrolls insidde.
- 2 vials of bright blue liquid.
- a small black box covered in runes. Not loocked, it looks like a ring box.
- A gold goat head medallion.
- A sizeable pile of silver and copper coinss, mostly copper.
- Two plain brass rings.
"This was the treasure that Humphrey, Lapis, Felix, and myself gathered in our first few encounters. We had agreed to divide it up when we reached safety."
He looks sad, "but they never made it..."
Looking to Nebious he takes all the items, except the coinage, and places them on the table.
"I presume the bright blue vials are healing potions?"
Then he opens the small wooden box revealing two scrolls.
"Perhaps you can tell us what magics are written upon these, I'm sure the magic users in our party, and yourself, would be interested in them. I do not have the key to the locked chest, perhaps one of my friends can open it. The rest of the items I don't know about, but anything you can tell me I would be most appreciated. Thank you milord."
OOC:
It pays to keep good archives when you play a game for nearly five years.
:-)
TIMOR
Timor's eyes light up when he hears the medallion mentioned aloud. He moves a bit closer so as to get a better view over Voriax's shoulder.
"Diabolicus..." he mutters under his breath - not to anyone in
particular other than to himself.
He comes to recognise that the symbol is very much like that of Diabolicus, perhaps some sort of variation or perhaps it is true to form - he only knows that it is very similar to what he knows it to be.
KINSON
Kinson looks at Timor.
"Yes! I remember now. We found several of these medallions on the minions of the evil temple beneath Pensula, and several members of the group were speculating that it might me a temple to Diabolicus. Perhaps these medallions were their means of identifying who was a temple member."
He scratches his chin thoughtfully.
TIMOR
"Good Kinson, much as I wear this medallion to commemorate Ellanna, the priests of Diabolicus wear their medallions to do the same - true, it did recognise them as members of the temple, but it was also their spiritual link or reminder and their representation to the dark holiness that they serve...served."
He catches himself and puts the final verb in past tense given the fact that the priests of which they speak or no longer on this world.
After a moment of pause, he reaches his hand up his torso and grasps his own holy symbol. His knuckles begin to turn white with the intensity with which he holds it. A silent prayer is said then his composure returns to normal - only he himself knows what he was just thinking about, but whatever it was, it was surely a powerful inner thought.
DM
Nebious looks at it and nods.
"Those blue potions again are potions of healing. That goat head is the symbol of Diabolicus. What is in the small black box?"
He looks at the scrolls.
"Fireball and Phantom Steed on the first one, Detect Magic, and Knock on the second one. All in all good spells. "
KINSON
"I honestly don't know. I have always assumed it was empty. We all know what use assumption is..."
Kinson takes the small black box and examines it, trying to ascertain how to open it. If it's obvious he'll open the box.
"Do you have a blacksmith about the keep, I bet he has the means to remove the padlock from the small chest; if you would allow me to incur his services? Are either of the brass rings of interest?"
Kinson realises he is pressing Lord Nebious and looks a little embarrassed at his excitement.
DM
Nebious nods.
"The brass rings seem to be marriage rings. They are magical but not very. The deowmer is quite week. As for a Smith there is one in town."
KINSON
Kinson makes a small bow.
"Thank you good sir."
Kinson takes the scrolls and places them back in the box.
"These are not my way." he says, while tapping the hilt of this sword.
"Who would like them?"
VORIAX
"I have no need for them, as long as I can copy a few spells from the book Kaddar has loaned me. Let's go look at the house, then come back and rest. I can copy them when we have a few hours to relax."
MAXIMILLION
Max looking at the scrolls.
"I would like to have the knock spell and phantom steed. The rest I cannot cast or already have."
KINSON
Kinson removes the scroll from the box and hands it to Max.
"Max, can you tell us, what do these magics do? The more information Legildur and I have the better we can form an operational plan for any situations we might encounter."
DM
The box seems easy enough to open. But Kinson is unable to open it.
KINSON
Kinson struggles with the small box, obviously frustrated.
"Well 'tis either a trick, or it just doesn't like me. Would any of the more nimble fingered among us like to try opening it?"
He looks to Biladoc and Alof.
"Want to try opening it?"
TIMOR
With that said, Timor stays with the others, trying desperately to figure out what they should do next.
"You wouldn't by chance have a map of the local surrounding areas, would you?" asks the healing priest of the Hasbis(ian?) lord.
If Nebious can get them a map, Timor lays it flat on a nearby table.
"Legildur, come here as I am terrible with maps and directions. A good way to start our investigation is to mark off the places that are known sources for undead material (grave sites, ruins, etc)..and then mark off any places that have been mentioned as 'highly active' (in regards to undead activity)" - he's hoping to try and find a pattern.
Timor knows he is useless when it comes to reading maps, as such, he'll let the others take more careful looks at the terrain's layout...
Speaking of maps, Timor pulls out one final item for Nebious.
"Here is one small way we can begin to repay you for your kindness. When we were in the maze, we made several copies of maps so we wouldn't get lost and could find our way if we were separated. I would like you to have my copy. It isn't complete for it only shows the areas we travelled through entirely... but should you ever travel underground behind the temple, and find yourself travelling through the same portal we did an end up in the maze, this will be a handy thing for you to have (besides, it will make a rather unique item for his personal library as I doubt many people have a first-hand map of that place)"
DM
He shows you a map. (Please refer to the web page.) Nebious smiles.
"Why, thank you."
You note there is one location an old castle. It was the site of an ancient battle. There are also rumours of grave sites in the forests nearby the Red Mages Tower.
LEGILDUR
OOC:
None of the maps I have show the Red Mage's Tower. It is south of us is it not? Is it in the forest to the south east?
BIC:
As Nebious finishes pouring over the magical items and spreads the map flat on the table, Legildur asks of the mage.
"How long do you think it will take to identify the purposes of so many items?"
Looking at the map:
"I remember the rumours from our visit a week ago," says the elf and once again pauses at the thought of the 3 years lost.
"We'd probably best start today if at all. Where do you think Nebious, where is the most likely source of the undead? Bone Hill and the castle, or the Pines, or back towards the Red Mage's Tower?"
The intonation in Legildur's voice indicates that he'd rather the first two than returning to Zandor just yet.
Placing the tip of his finger on the map to the south of Hasbis Legildur says:
"What about the Haunted House? Is that of any interest?"
DM
Correct, it is in the forest to the south east. There is a road that leads into the forest. There is a spurt that goes north in the woods that leads to the red tower. The other main road continues on More or less east coming out the other side of the woods.
Nebious smiles.
"Ah the haunted house. I had forgotten about that one. I would start with the house or the Castle at Bone Hill. If nothing else they would be interesting even if they are not the source of the undead. Then I would make my way to the pines and towards Zandor's. It is said a powerful mage fought in that battle on Bone Hill... I wonder what things... have been left behind. "
SAGGAR
"Where do they come from? Perhaps we could aide in removing the source of the attacks milord? And perhaps you have news of a dragon orb that might help us in our quest?"
DM
He shakes his head.
"I no naught of any more information on the Orb you seek. As for the attacks as we have said several times we do not know where they are coming from."
LEGILDUR
"Well, you've all heard Nebious' suggestion. But first of all, are we together in helping Hasbis?" asks Legildur as he looks around the Band.
Assuming yes:
"Right then," he continues.
"I say we check the house first and then check back here to see if there are any developments. In any case, it shouldn't take more than a day and maybe Nebious will have a better idea on some of these items we've left for him to examine. Then we can head north to the Bone Hill and the Pines. What say you, the Haunted House then?"
KINSON
"I agree," says Kinson.
"Sounds like a good strategy, actually it's the first time in a long time we've had a strategy; other then Stay Alive."
He laughs heartily.
BILADOC
I shrug my shoulders at Legildur's suggestion:
"Why not? It's not like I've got anything important to do right now... I'd like to get some more daggers before we leave, though..."
After Nebius examines Legildur's wound and says he can't heal it, I approach Voriax and whisper to him:
"Do you think that ring could heal Legildur? If Nebius can't do it, I don't see how we can..."
When Voriax, Kaddar and Maximillion start writing in their books, I'll move closer and spend some time watching them and how they trace the words and symbols.
LEGILDUR
Legildur looks at Kinson and laughs.
"Another mage's practical joke," he says.
"What about that Knock spell Nebious just mentioned, what does it do? Sounds like knocking on a door or something similar. But why you'd want a spell to do that I can't fathom."
"Let one of the mages have a look at it," the elf adds.
KINSON
Kinson's raises his eyebrows.
"Ahhh. I didn't consider magic being involved. Max or Voriax could either of you take a look at this box and see if it is magically to prevent it's opening? Or possibly fathom how to open it?"
VORIAX
Voriax chuckles at Legildur's comments.
"You could always use it to knock on an elf's helmet to get his attention I suppose. (smile) Actually Legildur, I believe the knock spell opens locked doors and other such things. We could try using the knock from the scroll on the box. I have the spell in my spellbook, so Max could copy it from there later. The scroll would allow us, hopefully, to open the box right now. Would you like me to try and open it w/the knock spell?"
MAXIMILLION
Max hearing what Voriax has to say.
"Yes go ahead and use the Knock spell on the box and I can copy the spell from you. Thanks by the way. If give time tomorrow I can identify up to twelve magical items. I would like to take time to copy some spells for the rest of today. First though I would like to see what is in the black box."
LEGILDUR
Legildur watches, a little perplexed, as people struggle to open the little black box.
OOC:
It's one of those new-fangled flight recorder thingies for dragon riders.
BIC:
Keeping his eyes on the goings-on he continues to discuss the Band's next step.
"I may be being a little hasty here," says the elven warrior.
"Maybe we should rest a day in Hasbis before striking out to wherever it is we decide to search first. I know that there are some of us who still yet require more time to re-equip after leaving the maze. I say we leave at first light tomorrow."
Legildur says to the mage.
"Nebious, how long would it take to reach the Haunted House by foot? What about the Pines and Bone Hill?"
OOC:
Just trying to decide on departure times and whether or not to plan for an overnight stay. Also, we may be better on horseback given the amount of trouble around.
KINSON
Kinson hands the scroll with Phantom Steed and Fireball on it to Max.
"I believe you said you were interested in the Phantom Steed portion of this scroll."
Then he turns to Voriax and hands him both the small black box, and the scroll with Detect Magic and Knock.
"If you don't mind casting the spell my curiosity is peaked and I want to learn what is inside."
He rubs his hands together with excitement and smiles.
LEGILDUR
"I wouldn't mind if we tried other avenues first," says Legildur as Kinson passes the black box and scroll to Voriax.
"I may not know much about magic but I would have thought that keeping a scroll handy for emergencies would have been smarter than using it now? As for copying spells and such, maybe Voriax you would like to do that today before we head off tomorrow," suggests Legildur.
VORIAX
"If you feel we have time, I wouldn't mind doing that. You never know how long it's going to be before we have time to sit down for a day."
:-)
LEGILDUR
"My thoughts exactly," says Legildur.
"It also lets us talk to Ianthe and Sleyvien when they get back tonight from wherever they have gone. Perhaps they will have some new information."
The elven warrior doesn't air his concerns that the last time two people wandered off from Hasbis (Connor and K'tryl), only one of them returned.
ALOF
I will attempt to open the box as Kinson asked, but will wait to see if the magic users in the group attempt a spell before I do.
BILADOC
I say to Kinson:
"Want me to try and open that for you? It would save us the use of a
spell..."
If he says so, I'll try to open the box, after checking for traps (or
the name Pandora written on the lid). I won't insist much, since I'm
curious as to how the spell works.
VORIAX
"Good idea. If you can't do it or it explodes in your face (Voriax steps back and behind Legildur), then I will try the knock spell."
MAXIMILLION
"Legildur, if I am given one more day, then we would have a chance to identify some of this stuff, provided we can get the required pearls. Our party will be much stronger if we knew what some of these magic items did and I believe we will need to be as strong as possible.
I will though use the opportunity to copy new spells into my book today. So will leave tomorrow or the day after?"
TIMOR
At the mention of marriage rings, Timor's mind begins to wander... wander back into the day he first attended a wedding as one of the overseeing priests. He was still in training at the time and went as an assistant to Priestess Fria who was the official overseer. The air was fresh, the birds were singing - it was a wonderful day for Elanna to bless the matrimonial bond. Oh sure, there was one small disturbance when a jealous lover showed up uninvited and unannounced, but that was taken care of in short order when he realised he was too late to stop anything and that the bride and groom had already been announced as newlyweds in the eyes of Elanna.
Those were the days of training, the simple days...
The sound of Legildur and Nebious discussing the plan of surveillance, Voriax and Max discussing mystical spells whose power (though impressive) can never equate to the majesty of the divine, and Biladoc, Kinson and Alof discussing a sealed black boxes who contents remain a secret to all except the one who sealed it.
Yes, these are these are the days of life, the slightly more complicated days...
The brown eyed priest looks around the room in passive curiosity, wondering what type of day the next day will be...
LEGILDUR
"Depending on what Nebious, Ianthe and Sleyvien say," says Legildur.
"But the sooner we move, the better - within reason. I think allowing time for mages to prepare spells and the rest of us to collect much needed replacement equipment is time well spent. As for identifying magical items, I suggest we leave that to Nebious for the time being."
KINSON
Kinson hands the box the to Biladoc.
"Thank you my friend."
Looking at Alof.
"How would like to try your hand at picking locks? I've still got the small padlocked chest."
OOC:
I had to flip a coin to choose between Alof and Biladoc.
:-)
TIMOR
Timor watches as Solomon sits idly on Max's shoulder; the brown eyed
priest silently wonders what the creature must be thinking and feeling...
But Legildur's words snap the priest out of his trance.
"So then, it looks like tomorrow at dawn we begin our investigation - that would give us the most hours of sunlight possible at search and travel what we can. Might I reminder everyone we apparently have three years of sleep to catch up on, three years worth of wear on our travelling clothes, and apparently three years worth of meals as well" the last remark directed towards Biladoc with a smile.
BILADOC
I start examining the black box (maybe from a Blue dragon 707, hey,
Adrian?) but almost let it fall as I hear Timor.
"What?! I never thought of that! Gods, 3 years times 12 months times
lots of days times 7 meals a day (9 on holidays) that makes... "
I have to hold on to the table, pale as a sheet (a clean one, that is).
"Timor, that's a horrible thought..."
I try to recover and ask Voriax:
"Do you think it was that ring that made all this time went by? Or the
voyage through the mirror's portal? Or the maze itself?"
I return my attention to the box and try to open it, mumbling:
"Maybe it's got something to eat inside!..."
SAGGAR
"My friend, how far away is this abandoned castle and place that we are to investigate, perhaps it would benefit us to go part way this day that we truly do have the most hours of light to investigate its dark secrets"
Saggar speaks as he comes from his trance, lost in his thoughts of the meaning of the nightmare he had that eve prior.
VORIAX
"Actually, I believe that it was not caused by use of the ring. Some area effect in the maze mayhaps. I'm not particularly anxious to go back there myself and find out. Three years is a lot to lose in one shot. I'm rather glad we are going to check out more surrounding areas first."
LEGILDUR
Shrugging his shoulders, Legildur says:
"You could very well be right Saggar. We need to decide. But I'm not overly keen to stay out overnight if undead are roaming the lands."
DM
Nebious smiles again.
"The house would take about four hours. Bone Hill around 6 hours and the Pines about 10 hours. Be careful with the swampland near the Pines. Rumour is that there are beasties in it."
Alof fiddles with the box for a while He notes the sides do turn in parts. It manipulated just right. It is some sort of puzzle box.. Hmm there is a hinge he can see that. It must open to reveal something within. The box intrigues him but after ten minutes it is not open.
Biladoc takes a look at the Black Box after Alof is done looking at it. After ten minutes he has the same luck as Alof.
LEGILDUR
"Looks like some mental gymnastics is required," says Legildur as Alof gives up on the box.
"Perhaps Voriax, you should have a look at it," suggests the elf as he privately wonders what sought of treasure must be hidden within such a contraption.
OOC:
I would have laughed if you said that each side of the box had nine squares of up to 6 different colours.
:-)
VORIAX
"I can certainly try and figure it out. Probably some child's toy or
something. Those are always the hardest to figure out."
Voriax will attempt to open it prior to using the knock spell.
DM
Voriax sits at the table with the Black box and seems to have less luck than Alof and Biladoc.
MAXIMILLION
Max looks at the box, very intrigued.
"My master use to challenge me with puzzles, in order to exercise my mind. Do you mind if I take a turn at it."
DM
Voriax having finished with it hands it to Max. Max plays with the sides for a while. He begins to think the darn thing can't be solved. You can tell that Alof and Biladoc are stewing over having not opened it...
VORIAX
"Well, since we are going to spend the extra night here anyway, I think I will memorise a knock spell from my book and save the scroll. You never know when you may need a quick door opener, other than Legildur's shoulder."
Voriax tosses the box to someone else in disgust.
SAGGAR
Looks at the two with the box.
"Mayhaps this dwarf and priest could take a look at it?"
KINSON
"Seems quite a mystery. My curiosity is growing. Certainly you may look at it Saggar."
SAGGAR
Saggar takes the box and tries to figure out its puzzling mystery.
DM
Saggar looks at it next. He is dumbfounded by the complexity of it...
"This surely can't be opened." He says more to himself than anyone else.
LEGILDUR
Legildur ponders the mage's words for a few minutes as he watches Alof, and then Biladoc, attempt to open the black box, thinking the scroll may have to be used at this rate.
Shuffling in his seat and sipping again on the elven wine, Legildur continues to watch as the halflings' frustration mounts.
"Would any of these destinations (indicating the Haunted House, The Pines and Bone Hill) be unsuitable for horses?" asks Legildur, hoping to be able to cut down the travel time so as to limit the Band's exposure to night travel with undead on the prowl.
(assuming that the stables or the Lords have sufficient mounts for our needs and that everybody is prepared to ride. Then we would also need someone to guard the mounts while we explored).
OOC:
I was just thinking that the wish teleport also saved us from probably at least one, if not more, encounters with undead on the road back to Hasbis from the Red Mage's Tower.
DM
Nebious nods.
"They all can be reached by horse. You need to be careful when approaching the Pines because of the swampy areas. "
KINSON
Kinson hears Legildur's remark about horses.
"I know how to ride. In fact I had a horse at the Green Dragon Inn in Pensula. Since I didn't pay the inn keeper I figure it was more than a fair trade."
OOC:
Quite true. The Red Mage was only one of the problems between the maze and Hasbis. The biggest, probably, (let's hope).
LEGILDUR
OOC:
I is confused? On the map I have, The Pines is located to the north-east of Hasbis and is around 1/4 to 1/3 of the way towards Bone Hill, thus making The Pines a quicker trip?
TIMOR
Could always be differences in terrain and the map may not be to scale. Then of course, you toss in the frpg factor meaning that there may also be planer portals we have to cross between here and there... ;)
DM
Oops, my bad, I switched the times on those... I was thinking of something else... a graveyard somewhere in the woods.
LEGILDUR
Legildur easily snatches the box out of the air as Voriax tosses it away. Looking at it a little more closely, the elf begins to manipulate the sides of the box, marvelling at its construction and the ingenuity of the puzzle.
Finally, after a few minutes of fiddling and some mild frustration, Legildur passes the box back to Nebious for safe-keeping until the 'knock' spell is ready and notes that the Lord mage has said naught about it so far.
DM
The lord mages smiles as you hand it to him.
"A very good puzzle box it would seem. "
KINSON
With a sparkle in his eye, Kinson lets a small laugh escape.
"I'm hoping a great treasure is inside that benefits us all, but I won't be surprised to find a child's toy, or nothing at all!"
Finally the amusement gets the best of him and the laughter rolls out of him.
"I'm sorry, but if all of you could see the looks on your faces..."
He laughs even harder as the looks turn to good natured glares.
TIMOR
Timor, who has been relatively silent while listening begins to
momentarily choke on his own spit at the mention of horses. *cough*
*cough* - after realising he's attracted attention, he raises his hand and says he's alright....
LEGILDUR
As the party sits and talks to Nebious while watching the halflings fiddle with the puzzle box, Legildur looks across at Kinson's tall frame. Thinking the ornate broad sword sits well on the Paladin, the elf sighs to himself and moves across to stand beside him.
"Kinson," Legildur starts a little unsuredly.
"I have been doing some thinking lately about my equipment and how I equip for travel and dangerous adventure."
Pointing with his left hand towards the large body shield leaning up against the wall near the door, he says:
"My kite shield was found around the same time as the sword you now carry. It has stood me in good stead over the last few weeks since I have carried it. It is enchanted and is most effective against missile attacks. The latter is due more to its sheer size rather than the enchantment itself - although that does help. Nebious has said, though, that it was made to protect the bearer from the mighty breath of dragons - that I haven't tested - thank Laskanthar. As you can see, this property would make it a good companion for the broad sword.
Reluctantly though, I think it is time to pass it on. Not that this is an easy decision mind you. And I have spent much time agonising over it. But the shield is rather too bulky for the sought of fighting style I prefer. Even my griffin plate mail must go one day for the same reason. I have found the shield overly restrictive in melee and it prevents me from employing my bow as it takes too long to remove it from my arm.
So, if you'd be interested, I offer that we should swap shields as I'd rather it was kept within the Band. I think that would benefit both of us." Legildur adds with a smile whilst eyeing Kinson's (smaller) medium shield.
KINSON
Kinson listens to Legildur at first with a light hearted ear (after
everyone's frustration over the black box), but he hears the seriousness in Legildur's voice and intently focuses on his words. The meaning of Legildur's offer, to give his kite shield in exchange for Kinson's medium shield, sinks in slowly leaving Kinson in a momentary state of shock. With his composure so defeated the thoughts he normally hides beneath the surface flash across his face. Surprise. Obviously he is joking, Kinson thinks. Wonder. He has always admired Legildur's shield. Protest. Surely he will deny this offer, it is too great a gift! Understanding. What the elf says makes sense.
"I remember Dowran, a friend, from my training days. The man absolutely loved swords, any size, any kind, he was constantly training, and he got to be pretty good with a blade. Then the commander got this idea that the troops of the order should be trained (or familiarised) with weapons that were not their primary
ones. Dowran and I had to go and learn about bows. We both thought of the bow as something to use for hunting, not battle, we both learned a lot that week.
Anyway, after a quick set of verbal instructions we were handed a couple of short bows and a quiver full of arrows, and set loose in the training area to get the feel of the bow. My first arrow missed the target, in fact it missed the wall behind the target, I knew it was going to be a long week. But Dowran's first arrow landed dead in the centre of the target with a loud thwack! And then his second did the same thing, and the third, and the forth... Every arrow he
let fly went exactly where he wanted it to go. Now you have to understand Dowran had never even touched a bow, he grew up in a merchant class family and had lived in a city his whole life. The instructor thought Dowran had been trained but he had known Dowran's family most of his life, and besides he was the only one within three days ride that could train someone to use a bow for anything but hunting. He handed Dowran his own long bow and quiver and told him try it out. It was no different, every arrow he shot went exactly where he wanted. We all had to admit he was a natural. By the end of the week I could hit the target with an arrow every two shots; but Dowran could hit the target from 300 yards, while riding a horse with no saddle at full gallop. We were given two days to rest before we were to return to our normal training. Dowran came to me and told me he had decided to become a bowman. He handed me his long sword and asked that I find a good home for it..."
Kinson looks Legildur in the eye.
"Indeed I understand the weight of choosing a path. I'm sure you have thought long and hard about this decision and I will not make it more difficult for you by asking for details. I accept your offer."
He clears his throat.
"But only on two conditions. First, I will give you my shield, it is of excellent quality, but is quite plain and not fitting a warrior of your calibre. At the first opportunity you will allow me to replace it with one that we both agree on, and I will start by asking the Lords, and blacksmith of this town if they have a suitable shield I can purchase. Second, and this is really the most important, you will allow me to swear to you and the band an oath to honour this gift."
He looks at Lord Nebious.
"My lord, will you witness me to kneel and take an oath of protection to the Band of the Silver Blade?"
DM
Lord Nebious nods to Him.
"Yes, go ahead."
LEGILDUR
Legildur sighs in relief at Kinson's acceptance of the gift and looks longingly once more at the marvellously crafted iron shield he left leaning against the wall, admiring the emblem of the dragon breathing flames and the way the dragon's eyes seem to be looking directly at the observer from any angle.
"Aye Kinson, 'twas not an easy decision to take," says the elven warrior.
"But I can tell you a little about the reasons why I bequeath it to you. Firstly, I have come to a crossroads of soughts in my training. Before me I have some choices to make for my future. I have already invested much training, to good effect, in the use of one of my peoples' favoured weapons - the long sword.
While I also show promise with bows, events seem to be guiding me to use the sword - but I cannot improve with both. Besides, with a weapon such as Vinguard, it would be a crime not to use such a magnificent blade to its full capability.
As a warrior, I find the cut and thrust of swordwork rewarding and enervating. The hand-to-hand contest of blade-work really makes me feel alive and I relish that - not the killing. I do not gain the same satisfaction from the use of bows. It would be remiss of me to walk away from what I feel may be a calling. While I may not live to be the greatest swordsman known, I feel I have the capacity to become a great master of sword - but maybe I overstretch myself - only time will tell.
But to master the sword requires great sacrifice of time and effort. The second reason is that the great masters are at their best when unencumbered by the other trappings of war and left free to move through their battle stances. Hence why I must forgo the shield, as faithful as it has been. If I don't, then I fear I may not take my training further. In time, I will probably have to lighten my armour, or even forgo that entirely to achieve my goal. The third reason is that you are a more than worthy person to keep the shield. Probably more worthy than I in many respects.
I will, however, gladly accept your counter-offer of the medium shield as an interim step in my training. As for replacing it with something more appropriate, feel no obligation there. I had already decided that once we leave the tower that I would approach the blacksmith who made my plate mail for him to make the matching shield.
As for your second condition, I require no oath from you to the Band or I. We work together in the name of good deeds. However, each of us may have their own destiny that they follow. I would not want an oath to a bunch of adventurers to stand between a person and their future. Much as Sylvan and Ayla departed to see to their nation. For as long as we work together, I will be grateful for your right arm. If you must leave, then I would be sad to see you go but I would also wish God's speed upon you."
KINSON
Kinson ponders for a few moments, then nods his head slowly, obviously having come to a decision. He says quietly to Legildur.
"Very well my friend. Thank you."
He smiles and hands Legildur his shield.
SAGGAR
Saggar grins at the two with the shield as he offers the lord the axe and sceptre to review.
"I would suggest us choosing our target and moving close to such locale as to be able to reach it in the morning of the next day"
LEGILDUR
"That idea has some merit Saggar," says Legildur as he thinks about the dwarf's words.
"But, like I said, I'd prefer we didn't camp overnight given the undead threat - particularly when Hasbis is within striking range for protection and rest."
"I was thinking," says the elven warrior, "That perhaps, if Hasbis has the supplies needed, that we could purchase some horses for those who can ride and perhaps a cart and some draft horses for those who can't. That way we could cover ground much quicker than on foot. And let's be honest here Saggar, as fabled as dwarves might be for their extraordinary feats of endurance and forced marches into battle, their rate of movement isn't quick. I also think that Alof
and Biladoc would prefer not to walk the distances we intend to cover over the next few days.
With the horses and cart, we could depart at first light and return before nightfall and still examine the points of interest. We could also then report back to the Lords regularly and keep them informed of our findings. Along with that, hopefully Nebious will have distilled some of the properties of the magical items we intend to leave behind. The added speed of being mounted could also enable us to evade any pursuers - we need not always fight.
We'd also need to hire someone to guard the horses after we dismount. Or maybe the Lords could furnish one or two men-at-arms who'd be willing to assist us? What say you Nebious? In fact, would you and Lord Doth be able to furnish war-horses from your own stable to both Kinson and I - for a price of course."
KINSON
Kinson turns and looks at Lord Nebious, obviously interested in the subject Legildur has brought up. He does not, however, add to the conversation.
DM
Selander holds up her hands and shakes her head. She smiles at Legildur when he speaks of people to guard their horses. She points at herself and stands tall flexing her ample muscles. Nebious stifles a laugh.
"She does have potential does she not."
LEGILDUR
"Well then, my two inquisitive friends," says Legildur to the halflings.
"Has that small black box addled your brains so much that you have forgotten the chest there," he says as he points to the small locked chest, hoping that the rogues will wish to redeem some self-esteem by picking the lock (after checking for any mage tricks of course).
SAGGAR
"Why ride a beast, when ones feet are far more solid fixed upon the stones of the earth... slow mayhaps yet steady and unrelenting my friend"
LEGILDUR
"That may be so my friend," says Legildur to the dwarf, "but the horses and wagon would enable us to reach our destination much quicker than we could achieve on foot, and be rested for whatever awaits us. I doubt the mages would appreciate the long walk, followed by the strains of combat."
DM
Nebious nods.
"We have a few horses we could sell. But I dare not spare a man in these times. perhaps you can find someone in town that will assist you."
LEGILDUR
"The horses are good news," says Legildur.
"We would also need some tack and harness and probably some plain riding horses and ponies for the less experienced riders among us. Or maybe even a wagon if it comes to that.
As much as I expected," says the elf in response to Nebious' refusal to loan some men-at-arms for the forays.
"Aye, she does," says Legildur with some exasperation evident at Selander's forthrightness.
"And we may have little choice about it," he adds.
"Well Selander," says the elf to the hopeful girl, "Can you ride a horse?"
DM
Selander pauses for a few seconds and then nods.
Nebious says:
"Yes there should be plenty of tack and riding horses for all of you. If you need a wagon that can be arranged as well. "
ALOF
Alof attempts to open the lock chest.
DM
Alof attempts to open the locked chest with no results. he shakes his
head.
"Just not having any luck today."
He looks back at the black box longingly.
LEGILDUR
Legildur watches Alof's failed attempt to pick the padlock.
"What about you, Biladoc?" asks the elven warrior.
"I understand you have similar abilities to Alof, why don't you give it a try?"
As Alof fiddles with the lock and Saggar plays with the black box, the elven warrior remembers something.
"Nebious, we found 10 of these stoppered iron flasks," says Legildur, "but only 6 of them contained the potion of healing (blue liquid with rosy smell) you just identified. I have 4 empty vials in my backpack. They are of little use to us, would you like them?"
DM
He smiles and nods.
"That would be nice. Perhaps I can find a use for them."
BILADOC
Still looking at the black box, it takes me some time to notice something to redeem my honour as a thi... gifted locksmith. I see Alof studying the padlock on the small chest and watch his attempt to open it.
I try to see what he tried, making a mental note not to waste time in the same proceedings. When he gives up, I say to him:
"Mind if I try?..."
I first examine the padlock, comparing it with other locks I've found before. I take out my lockpicks and start working on it. When Legildur asks about our opinion on searching the haunted house, I lift my head from the chest:
"Yes, sure. I agree with that. Huh... as for horses, I never rode much... Think you could find some ponies or something?"
I pause and look at Saggar with the corner of my eye and continue:
"Or... any other slow but steady and unrelenting mount..."
I turn back to the padlock, ready to dodge anything Saggar might inadvertedly drop in my direction...
LEGILDUR
Legildur decides to seek some agreement from the party about their intentions and how to go about them.
"Are we agreed then to search the Haunted House tomorrow?" asks Legildur as he looks around the Band as they battle with the small black box and padlocked chest.
"I suggested earlier that we use mounts to cover the ground more quickly and return to Hasbis tomorrow night. Does anyone disagree with this approach? If not, what mounts would you like us to purchase?" asks Legildur again, suggesting that he and Kinson, as the experienced horse riders, deal with this side of things whilst the rest of the party deals with the treasure.
TIMOR
Timor, who is still leaning against the room's stone wall, looks to the warrior elf and nods.
"With so many valid possibilities, any starting point is as good as another."
Timor's face turns sour at the second mention of horses.
"I, err, Riding a horse is a skill I have never quite mastered... I think I rode a horse once before... but it was for all of a heartbeat before I was...'shown' off... But then again, that was a while ago - perhaps my luck with such creatures has changed."
Timor rubs his upper thigh as if remembering an old soar and pain that once took residence at that spot.
LEGILDUR
"Ah yes," says Legildur whilst reminiscing in kind about his own introduction to horses.
"I'm sure we can find you something you will be secure with."
SAGGAR
Saggar smiles looking at Biladoc afore waiting to see if they can find the mounts.
"Perhaps but a wagon and one horse would be enough for all of us?"
VORIAX
"I too have not ridden a horse overly much, but anything that saves my delicate feet (grin here) is fine with me. If we are waiting until tomorrow to leave then, let's get everything else settled. Legildur, do you want to head up the quest for the horses? I have to copy some spells into a book, then rememorize my knock spell for the black box in the morning. No sense wasting time."
LEGILDUR
"On second thoughts, we'd be best if all mounted," says Legildur, "rather than one horse and a wagon. I thought we'd have at least Kinson and I mounted on war-horses, we are both experienced horse soldiers from way back.
And the rest of you, including any guards, we'd put on either war-horses, riding horses or ponies," the last added with a small grin for those who may be a little vertically challenged.
"Depending on our resources of course, but I think sufficient mounts probably exist within the Lords' holdings to equip us as necessary, and for the right price if I'm not mistaken," says Legildur, looking towards Nebious.
"So, we'd need 2 war-horses, 3 ponies and 5 riding horses, plus extras for the guards apart from the one for Selander. We'd also need saddles, bridles and feed."
DM
After a few seconds he lock on the chest pops under Biladoc's professional workings.
KINSON
"Hooray!" Kinson slaps Biladoc on the back.
"Great job! My first thought was to cut the lock off, but you've taught me a lesson today. You unlocked it and thus have the honour of opening the box, unless you think it might be trapped? I'll open it if you would like me too."
Kinson waits obviously quite curious as to the contents of the box.
LEGILDUR
"Well Alof?" asks Legildur with a raised eyebrow towards the halfling now staring agog at his partner's success.
"What have you to say for yourself in failing to open the lock? Should we retire you to a life here in Hasbis?" he adds.
Before Alof can answer, the first hint of a smile breaks in Legildur's eyes and then finally reaches his mouth where it becomes a broad smile for the little fellow. The last thing the elven warrior would wish is for either of the two brave and effective 'scouts' to leave the party - but it sure is fun to tease them a bit sometimes, like when offering to lower Biladoc down the privy.
:-)
DM
Nebious.
"I can provide you all that for say 900 gold?"
LEGILDUR
"I appreciate your generosity Lord Nebious," says Legildur as he reaches into his belt pouch and pulls out a small cloth bundle.
Unwrapping it, those close by can see 4 gemstones lying in the palm of the elf's hand - a ruby and 3 emeralds. Picking up the ruby, Legildur passes it to Nebious before continuing.
"But we accept it. This ruby is perhaps a slight overpayment, but consider that a token of our appreciation towards yours and Lord Doth's much appreciated assistance."
DM
Nebious nods.
"We accept."
LEGILDUR
"Very well then, Selander." says Legildur.
"You have your wish, you may accompany us as a guard."
DM
She jumps like a little girl who has just been told she is going to the circus. She smiles big and gives Legildur a huge hug.
LEGILDUR
Normally, the elven warrior would welcome the embrace of a comely woman, but now, he is in unfamiliar territory and reluctantly returns the hug - but not so enthusiastically - with some mild colour evident in his smooth features, thankful also for the plate mail he is currently wearing in these times of trouble.
"There will be some guidelines you will have to follow," says Legildur as he politely breaks the embrace.
"But we'll deal with those later. In the meantime, we will have to get you some more equipment - armour, shield and weapons."
"Also, how well can you ride a horse?" asks Legildur.
"Hold up one finger for beginner (like some of those here), 2 fingers for experienced and 3 for expert."
SAGGAR
Saggar can not help but begins laughing at his lords method of mastery evaluation in equine matters.
"Mayhaps you should ask the same of her skill with blade?"
LEGILDUR
"I have already seen that," says Legildur.
"And she requires tuition before being let loose on the world."
DM
She looks down to the floor as she blushes and shuffles her feet.
TIMOR
From his position on the side wall, Timor casually holds up one
(non-offensive) finger in a gestured response to the elven warrior's
query.
Silently, he wonders if he'll have a chance to speak with lord Doth
during this day of re-equipping before the journey...
LEGILDUR
Legildur catches the priest's movement out of the corner of his eye. Glancing towards him, the elf notes the single up-thrust digit and nods to indicate he has seen it, smiling slightly at knowledge already guessed at.
DM
Selander nods to him and holds up 1 finger.
LEGILDUR
"Thought that'd be the case," says Legildur.
"But we can fix that with time."
BILADOC
When I hear Legildur ask Alof about failing to open the lock, I approach Alof and give him a slight poke in the ribs with my elbow.
"Pay no attention to him. I'll help you learn how to master those
tumbling moves you saw me use before and then I'll help you with your
lock picking."
When I see Legildur take the jewels out and give the ruby to Nebius, I add with a wink to Alof:
"Maybe I can even help you learn to pick something else..."
After Legildur's question about riding knowledge, I raise three fingers.
Noticing some of the stares and frowns the party gives to me, after my talk about getting a pony and not having rode much before I say:
"What?! It can't be that hard! You just sit there and let the horse do the walking for you. It doesn't take a guild master wizard to do it!"
KINSON
Kinson laughs uproarishly!
"I'm surprised you didn't hold up four fingers!"
VORIAX
Voriax holds up one finger for Legildur to see.
"Just a beginner myself I guess. I would love to learn how to ride a horse properly though. Maybe someday I can put these books aside and do it. We'll have to see."
ALOF
I smile sarcastically at Legildur's remark about the lock and say to Biladoc.
"Seeing that I was the one who picked the locks in the maze I figured it was only fair to give you a chance."
:-)
MAXIMILLION
Max taking a break from his studies.
"Oh very good. I can ride in the wagon. Now let's see if we are going to take on undead, I will need some more oils. Enchanters don't really have a lot of spells that help against undead you know. But I can make our folks more effective. Since we have secured the use of a wagon, I think that I will take advantage of the space and get more than I usually would. Also, on the way I wouldn't mind some pointers on riding a horse. I did it when I came to this town, which I guess was three years ago, but I certainly paid for it in on my bottom for not knowing how to do it correctly.
Oh how soon are we leaving?"
Max will go buy flasks of oil and store them in the wagon.
OOC:
How many can Max get a hold of?
DM
He can purchase 1 flasks of oil from the general store and 1 of greek fire.
LEGILDUR
Legildur also eagerly awaits to see the contents of the box.
"Sorry Max, I've done some more thinking," says Legildur to Max's ready acceptance of the wagon idea.
"I think the wagon will be too slow and we'd best all be mounted. Under other circumstances the wagon would be preferred, but speed and mobility will be our defence tomorrow. We leave at first light.
Although maybe we will need one with Biladoc's undoubted skill at riding," he adds with a wink.
DM
Biladoc is peeking in the box. You see a dark velvet back with a gold draw string inside. Oh, there might be something under the bag as well. Looks like a book.
BILADOC
I gently use one of my daggers to take out the black bag from the chest.
I put my cloak on the floor and open the bag, holding it by the bottom, gently letting its contents fall on the cloth. I'll examine what's inside and after that I'll look at what else is inside the box.
I smile at Kinson's comment:
"I would have raised four fingers, but I'm not sure our noble leader knows how to count up to four... Didn't want to make him feel awkward, especially in front of his new admirer..."
I say this last part with a nod in Selander's direction. Once again, I keep an eye on Legildur, in case he drops something my way...
OOC:
Geez, what a clumsy party this is... ;-)
TIMOR
Since it appears as though the group has a day of preparations before them, Timor makes a quick mental list of things he wants to do.
If everything that needs his input has been established, Timor will make his own trip to the supply & goods store - he needs to purchase himself a large sack (empty of course)
He'll then head back to the temple so as to enjoy some time of prayer
within the confines of the holy walls.
And lastly on his list of things to do today, he is going to return to this very tower in hopes of gaining audience with Lord Doth alone - hoping to study and attend to the items they were discussing the night before. Hopefully the Lord would have had chance to awaken by then.
DM
Out of the black bag comes and emerald necklace. It has nine small gold orbs attached to the emerald necklace via fine gold chains. Inside the box still is a large leather bound book and a silver key with the emblem of a skull with a dagger through its eye socket.
TIMOR
Spotting the emblem through the crowd of people surrounding the table, Timor can't help but think:
"That doesn't look too friendly..."
DM
Timor thinks the key winks at him. he rubs his eyes and does not see this illusion again.
SAGGAR
Saggar looks upon the jewel in awe, standing motionless as he watches its glitter.
KINSON
Kinson picks up the book and key and hands them to Nebious.
"What do make of these? Biladoc, hand him the necklace, maybe he can tell us something about it too."
Kinson looks in the chest again, just in case there was something under the book?
TIMOR
Timor thinks about it some more and finally shares a thought with his
companions.
"I've given it brief - but adequate - thought. Powerful forces that are beyond my control or understanding have urged me to stay behind, here in Hasbis, tomorrow during the Silver Blade's journey to explore this haunted house. Perhaps I can use this time to do research at the temple - both in the temple and with the clergy. I may be able to find some documented or known weakness to these servants of Balron (the undead). Or I may just uncover what these unknown powerful forces are and why they are urging me to stay behind."
DM
Nebious does not touch the items the Kinson offers him. He instead looks at them from afar...
"Interesting Necklace you have there. I would be very careful with it if I where you."
He leans forward to examine it more closely.
"See these marks here on the gold orbs... Yes, it is a necklace of missiles. You can pop these orbs off and throw them. Where they land they will erupt into a fiery mass.....A potent weapon indeed. " He looks at the key.
"The key is interesting but means nothing to me. As for the book... Opening it will only tell."
KINSON
Kinson seems to be concentrating on the objects on the table.
LEGILDUR
Whistles softly.
"Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'dressed to kill'." Legildur says in wonder at such magic.
Those who are looking in Legildur's direction notice that the elf's eyes glaze slightly as the topic of conversation drifts towards the leather bound book that Nebious is obviously reluctant to examine closely.
"If you'll excuse me Lord Nebious," says the elven warrior.
"I have a few tasks to see to and it looks like you may be busy for a while," he adds with a wink at Voriax.
"I'll leave the dealing with these items in yours and Voriax's capable hands. Please inform Lord Doth when he rises that I will seek him out later."
With that, Legildur takes a last gulp of the fey wine and places the glass down. Heading towards the door, the elf picks up the medium shield that was Kinson's. Pausing slightly, he longingly eyes once more the dragon engraved kite shield that leans against the wall before exiting the room.
DM
Nebious nods to you.
"Very well sir. Lord Doth will have hate to not see you sooner." Nebious smiles at the elven warrior as he sees him stare at the shield.... He half mumbles to himself.
"It is hard to give up things one loves."
LEGILDUR
Legildur's keen elven hearing pick up most of the mumbled comment but he does not acknowledge it.
"I shan't be long about the tasks. Just a couple of things to follow up in the town in preparation for the morrow."
DM
Nebious nods to Legildur as he exits.
KINSON
Kinson seems to stop concentrating so hard, and picks up the book. He opens it and reads a few lines.
"Hmmm... Seems to be a training book. Looks like it covers physical
conditioning, and combat training with lots of various weapons. I think I'll keep this, after I've read it I'm sure Legildur will want to see it too."
He stows the book in his backpack.
VORIAX
Voriax, looking over towards the book says:
"Well, I don't have a read magic memorised just right now. Besides, it might be worth while to identify it prior to opening it, seeing as we are taking time to id everything else right now anyway. I'm going to my room to copy some spells over in a book. After that I need to memorise the knock and read magic spell. Anyone else coming?"
DM
Kinson just opened it.
VORIAX
Voriax is going to get started on copying those spells over.
OOC:
Do you want me to roll to determine how many pages are used up Charles? If so, I'll send you an email with the new list and page numbers.
DM
Yes, You roll the dice.
:-)
KINSON
Seeing that the meeting is at an end, Kinson clears his throat.
"I will handle the hiring of the remaining guards for the trip. I'll inquire of Jas the Innkeeper if he knows of some reputable folks for hire. Unless Lord Nebious can suggest a more suitable person to inquire of?"
"Then I'm planning on going to Dirk's Goods for some provisions and travel items.
I assume we'll meet up again at the Welcome Wench Inn later in the day to finalise our plans for tomorrow."
Kinson bows formally to Lord Nebious.
"Thank you for your hospitality good sir."
Kinson begins walking to the exit, stops, turns around as if he has forgotten something. His eyes go to the kite shield leaning against the wall. He picks up the shield, admires it for a moment, and walks to the exit.
DM
Nebious nods.
"Jas is a good choice. He should be able to point you in the right direction."
ALOF
After thanking Nebious for the kind hospitality I follow Legildur out of the tower. Before leaving I say to Kinson.
"I'll meet you outside, I could use a trip to Dirk's, if I can pick up some daggers there or if there's a smithy nearby there."
Turning to Biladoc.
"After I grab those daggers would ya mind teaching me that tumbling act of yours... never know when it might come in handy."
LEGILDUR
"You may accompany me if you like," says Legildur as Alof discusses his daggers.
"One of my stops will be at the blacksmiths. He is quite skilled - he made this plate mail - so I would think he would have some daggers."
TIMOR
Timor catches up with Legildur sometime during the day and informs the warrior that the forces which were asking him to stay behind have changed their mind - that Timor *will* be joining them to the Haunted House after all. The priest does say this with some discretion, he can't help but wonder why these powerful forces didn't want him to go in the first place, or why they suddenly changed their mind as easily as the wind changes direction on a spring day. Figuring he has bother Lord Doth enough already, Timor decides to, yet again, put off his discussions with him 'til later. He will instead just head back to the temple and spend some time trying to make sense of it all and mentally preparing himself for another day of arduous travel - this time on horse! When the sun begins to set, Timor looks out from the nearest window and watches the massive flaming sphere fall below the horizon - looking out on the land, wondering how easily the world becomes a darker, scarier, more evil place during the moon-lit hours...
He heads back to the main temple room. Staring at the large icon - the glowing blue hand - which rests atop the altar, Timor wishes the goddess Elanna good night. He then turns and bids his fellow clergymen a similar greeting. Off to bed he goes, ready to wake early to meet the others and head off towards this location.
----------------
And off to bed goes the storyteller, too. This chapter was very hard to put together, he needs a good night sleep before starting a new one. Until tomorrow, rest and prepare for a new journey.
