DM
You reach the street without any problem. As you put your feet on the
ground and look around you see two guys wearing brown cloaks in the alley
near where you are. They are starring at you. They begin walking towards you.
They are about 20 feet away. They are both humans and one is wearing a short
sword that you can see, the other has a dagger. You have never seen these
two before. At this moment you hear a roaring sound like a water fall fro
the window above. Looking up you can see red Light from the room you just
came from.
BILADOC
Do they look aggressive?
Are they reaching for their weapons?
Are they between me and the main door of the Inn?
I glance around the alley: Do I see anyone else? What do I see?
Do I hear any other sound from above (screaming, whatever)?
Does anything come out of the window (fire, someone jumping,
anything)?
DM
No.
No.
Yes, you are on the side of the Inn. You can go the other way down
the alley and circle around.
Behind you the alley opens into a smaller street than the Street of
Swords where the Main entrance to the Inn is. You can see a couple of people
walking down the Street of Swords but nothing else unusual.
You hear a battle cry from Dain.
Nothing..Yet. :-)
DAIN
"VENGEANCE FOR CLAN CRAGCLIFF!!! DEATH TO THE BEASTS AND THE CULT THAT
SPAWNED THEM!"
BILADOC
I say to Shadow:
'Shadow, follow!'
At the same time he takes off from my shoulder, I start Tumbling pass
the two guys to the main door of the Inn.
'Out of my way, strangers!'
When I reach the main door I'll enter the Inn and run upstairs.
DM
You tumble past the two men and bolt for the front of the Inn. The two
men run after you drawing weapons. As they round the corner towards the
front of the Inn the guards at the main gate spot them.
"HALT!" One of the guards yells.
BILADOC
Without stopping, I say to the two guys following me:
'Enter the Inn and barricade the door.'
I enter the Inn, looking out for the two thugs that were downstairs.
Shadow sweeps inside after me (I hope...). As soon as I get inside,
I'll take out my daggers from my backpack and get them ready to
throw, running upstairs to the room.
DM
You enter the Inn to see a strange scene before you. Shadow dives
past you and is circling in the main room. Alof is on the steps fighting with a
man wearing a brown cloak and wielding a long sword. The man seems to be
driving Alof back down the steps. You see a man in the middle of the main
room rushing towards Alof's exposed back with short sword drawn. However,
you see that suddenly his skull is split wide open and he drops to
the ground dead.
However, there is nothing there to have done that. And last up at the
top of the steps a man in a brown cloak throws two daggers into the room
where the party was. You hear a great commotion of noise coming fro up there. It
sounds like a combination of moans, screams, roars , zaps, clangs, etc.
You all hear Alof yell,"Anyone who cares to help me be my guest!"
from the downstairs of the Inn.
BILADOC
As I enter the Inn, I yell, pointing at the guy attacking Alof:
'Shadow, kill!'. Hopefully, Shadow will strike the man in the head
with his claws and beak.
At the same time, I'll throw two daggers at him, reaching for another
pair of daggers. If he falls, I'll run (tumbling) upstairs, throwing the
next two daggers at the man in the brown cloak.
What are the two guys who followed me doing? Are they blocking the
door?
CARYNTH
Well, Carynth is still attempting to heal lapis, but she'll swing with
her scimitar as soon as she's able. Is there time to laugh at Alof's
request?
I'm going to finish trying to heal Lapis and then try to run
downstairs to help Alof, scimitar in hand!
(Running carefully, of course! =-] )
DM
Alof, you attack the man on the steps. he parries your blow and swings
at you cutting your cheek (-1hp). She back up parrying his blows. You
notice the dead guy on the main floor moving as if someone is searching him.
You also see that Biladoc has just appeared in the main entrance to the Inn
with his Hawk "Shadow".
ALOF
I am going to try and jump and then hold down whatever is searching
the body and hope that Biladoc does something like throw a dagger to
help me out with the guy who just hit me.
BILADOC
I say to the two guys who followed me:
'Barricade the door.'
At the same time, I throw another pair of daggers at Alof's opponent
and say:
'Thanks, invisible one. Who are you?'
I reach for my last dagger and take out my short sword, joining Alof
and heading upstairs.
DM
Humphrey grabs the grappling hook and rope and somehow gets it around
the neck of one of the demons you all are fighting. Dain jerks his head free
from the demons grip leaving his helmet behind. A green smelling substance
drips on his head from the beasts armpit as he does. A loud roaring can be heard
from Dain's backside as he make his comments to the brown cloaked man
coming in the doorway. Dain's axe sinks deep into the Demon before him. The
beast roars and turns on him still moving of course. Fraxen places both feet on
the downed demon and yanks on his axe. At first it does not give and then
suddenly it comes loose sending Fraxen across the room towards the
window. He almost falls out the window before he regains his balance.
Somewhere in there you saw Fraxen's dagger swishing about.
Kinson yells, "See if there are shutters on the window, and close
them."
Kinson swings his dagger and stabs the one that Dain just axed. The
creature falls as it reaches for Dain with is clawed hands. Carynth chuckles
a little in the middle of the fight as she gets hold of Lapis she can tell no
life beats in his heart now. She swings her scimitar as she makes for the
doorway but misses. Gathrax just stares at his dagger. (I have not gotten a
message from him in some time). The man coming through the door crinkles up
his nose some as he swings his short sword at Dain. Dain attempts to avoid the
blow but is unable to do so. The short sword only leaves a small red mark
on Dain's left arm (-2hp). One of the two remaining Demon hoardlings left
struggles with the grapple and rope that Humphrey has wrapped around it. It
only succeeds in getting more tangles. Humphrey is manage to hold onto it
no matter how hard it pulls and twists. The second one leaps for Fraxen.
You can hear Fraxen say "Uh-oh." As the beast leaps for him and slams into
the wall.
It shakes its head and turns toward Kinson.
CARYNTH
On the way out the door, Carynth stops to attack the man that just
came in the door, yelling out the door "Alof! Still alive down there?"
HUMPHREY
Humphrey uses all his strength to hold on to the rope that has
entangled one of the demons. "Will someone please knock this guy
senseless and shut those shutters Gathrax", hoping to get Gathrax out of
his trance.
DM
The two guys who followed you are looking back and forth nervously.
They seem concerned that the guard is coming.
The Hawk Shadow Dives towards the man Alof is fighting. Its sharp talons miss the man but he is flapping around him causing much commotion. Biladoc who is standing in the doorway charges tumbling as he throws two daggers at the man that Alof is fighting. One dagger misses and the other hits the man in the shoulder. Alof manages to barley parry the mans attack as he backs up. The dead body in the room drops to the ground. The man who is fighting Alof disengages and runs up the steps swiping at the Hawk as he does so. From above you hear Carynthe Yell, "Alof! Still alive down there?" There is still much commotion at the top of the steps. The brown cloak figure can be seen fighting with someone or ones in the entrance way to the room. The retreating man on the steps yells, 'Lets Clear!"
ALOF
I will run upstairs and search the body that I killed with my
daggers (I'll also retrieve my daggers) but if someone gets in my way I'll attack
them with my longsword and I will also yell out "I'm Ok Carynth it's just
there's an invisible guy here that I'm having trouble with."
DM
The cloaked man who ran in the room has just flown out covered in
blood. And you can see Humphrey and others begin to exit the room.
BILADOC
I tumble upstairs, following the guy Shadow is attacking. When I
reach him, I'll strike with shortsword and dagger. As I see Dain and
the rest of the party coming out of the room I say:
'Kill that man!'
DAIN
Dain turns and heads down the stairs in front of Humphrey and the
group coming out of the room behind him. He looks for allies and foes as he
enters the common hall, throwing a throwing axe at the nearest foe visible.
If no foes present, head for the door and the street from where the bolts
of magic came.
KINSON
Kinson sheaths his dagger, then retrieves his dropped sword.
He says, "Take your belongings with you, it probably isn't a good
idea to come back here."
Kinson looks to see who's left in the room, and who needs assistance.
(DM - Could you give a status of everybody's condition in the room?)
Then he follows Humphrey downstairs -- sword in hand.
DM
Lapis is down and not moving. he looks badly injured if not dead.
Felix is down and his lips are purple. He has claw marks on his chest
and arms.
Kaddar has disappeared vaporized or something by the ruby beam of
light. Gathrax has suffered the same fate as Kaddar.
CARYNTH
If Lapis is still alive, I heal him, and Lay Hands on Felix
HUMPHREY
Humphrey hearing Biladoc point to a figure and saying "Kill that
man!", will attack the person with both short swords.
ALOF
When I see the band I yell out " Be cautious there's some invisible
person here and they ain't frendly."
I'm going to continue what I was going to do Charles.
DAIN
If I see a man coming up the steps away from our companion, Dain
grunts and slams a broadaxe flatbladed against the guy, trying to knock him
unconscious.
If the first strike does not drop him he strikes him again "Mayhaps
this rat will have something useful he can tell us!"
DM
Carynthe rushes and checks on the fallen while the rest of the group
rushes out of the room into the hall. As you enter the hall You see a man in
the hall opening a door into a room. He wears a brown cloak and is covered
in blood. Shadow, Biladoc's black hawk, dives and claws the man's arm
leaving a bloody streak. The Man bats at Shadow but misses him. Just at that
moment from the bottom of the steps a army of dagger's flies towards the
man's back.
One dagger hits the door frame next to him. But, three daggers strike
his back and go deep. he moans as he falls forward. Dain, Kinson,
Fraxen, and Humphrey rush to the man and check but he is dead.
Meanwhile below the two men in the doorway sheath their weapons
and run south down the street.
You can hear the jingling of chainmail and weapons coming from the north.
CARYNTH
"I think we should vacate this place, gentlemen. chainmail and
weapons probably mean the king's guard." I sheath my scimitar and look sadly
at my fallen companions. "There is nothing we can do for these two.
They died of the demons poison."
HUMPHREY
Humphrey seeing that the fighting is over and that the guard are
coming looks at the carnage.
"Does anyone know what those creatures that are dead in our room.
They seem to be some sort of demon. I do not know what you faced
downstairs, but it seems that the main attack was directed in the room and
Kinson and myself and whose names this room is registered in. Well Kinson
are we going to face the music and talk to the guard. I am not sure we
can chance being taken in for questioning, if we do stay I suggest that
we give this letter to Biladoc. What say you sir Kinson."
DAIN
"Yeah, it is probably the guard. Should we leave or just go into the
other sleeping rooms that we have and pretend that we were not a part of
it? If we hear them, they are probably very close."
BILADOC
I say to the party:
'Carynth is right. I saw the guards at the gate coming in this
direction, when they saw I was being followed.
I say to Alof:
'Are you ok? That invisible guy downstairs cut down one of the thugs
who was about to attack you from behind.'
I'll retrieve my daggers and take a look into the room, from the
hall. If I see none inside, I'll search the man I killed and the one
Carynth and Dain killed.
DAIN
Dain grins "Here, two daggers I removed from my back should fit your
request"
DM
You get all your daggers back plus those Dain gave you. Searching the
men reveals a leather scroll case, two small pouches with a total of
23gp and 34sp. They had swords if ya want them. Nothing special about
their weapons. Each had four daggers except for the one Dain killed
who had 2. Because 2 where in Dain's back.
DAIN
I will search our fallen comrades. "I am sure these are cultist. I
have seen these demons before with the cult. We should regroup and attack their
temple again. They would not be expecting such a quick response and their
magic will be lower now since they opened gates and fired amber beams of magic
at us.
Besides, WE MUST AVENGE OUR FALLEN COMRADES!" After he finishes
checking the fallen, he pulls the dagger from his back while grimacing and wraps a
rough bandage around himself as he walks to one of the unspoiled sleeping rooms
to rest.
FRAXEN
"I agree with Carynth, we need to leave as soon as possible."
With that Fraxen walks back to the room and begins to gather his things.
ALOF
I am going to retrieve my daggers and search the guy I killed with
them and say to the group "Let's get out of here quick! Maybe head to the
sewers or something! Then we can divide everything we found up to
the people who can best use it. I myself could use a couple more
daggers."
KINSON
Kinson replies to Humphrey: "There is a huge evil temple under this
city, and they are brave enough to stage an attack in broad daylight within
the city walls.
They aren't afraid of the local militia, so they probably have them under control.
I agree we should hastily depart.
We can return at a later date and pay the Inn Keeper for damages. Is
there a back way out of the Inn? Possibly to the stables?"
DM
There is a back way out of the INN. Through the kitchen on the ground
floor and out the back into the alley.
DAIN
"The guard are looking for all elves to be registered. I think it
best we slip out a back window and down to the street to the sewer entrance
in the nearby ally" says Dain "we do not want to become wanted for killing
city guardsmen."
HUMPHREY
Humphrey hearing the approaching guard, "Ok, out the back way, I do
not trust the guard here, with he grabs his pack and heads down.
DM
Dain calmly walks back into the room and begins searching the bodies
of Lapis and Felix. Meanwhile Alof begins searching the bodies of the fallen
men on the lower floor and steps. Shadow circles around and lands on the
railing and just twists his head this way and that. Fraxen runs back into the
room and gathers his gear quickly and is ready to go. At this point a
group of six city guardsmen rushes in the front of the Inn.
"REBELS!" One of them yells pointing at the group.
BILADOC
I approach Alof, hand him over four daggers and say to the guard who
yelled:
'Yes, there were rebels here...AND WHERE IN THE &$%#&&% HELL
WERE YOU WHEN THEY ATTACKED US?? Look at us. We
almost got killed! Who's the man in charge? Is this why we pay taxes for?
To have to defend ourselves against criminals?'
CARYNTH
I don't think I'll spend any time doing that. I think I"ll leave out
of the back door, saying "Meet you all at the sewers!"
ALOF
I am going to quickly walk to the kitchen keeping my eyes on the
guard with my hands grasping the hilt of two of my daggers just in
case there's trouble. When I get in the kitchen I'm going to try and fall
back into the shadows. When the group has a chance to evacuate I'm
going to stay hidden and try and move silently into the ally.
FRAXEN
After gathering his belongings together, Fraxen hurries to the
kitchen and heads out the back door.
DAIN
Dain hearing the party leaving goes to the window of his room on the
back of the inn and climbs out the window, dropping to the ground and
joining the party as they move to the sewer entrance. He will wedge
the door from the kitchen with a dagger when he drops
DM
Biladoc's foul language and confusing speech catches the guards off
guard.
The stop in their tracks and look at the sergeant. Meanwhile, Carynth,
Kinson, Humphrey and Fraxen make there exit out the back. Alof start into the
kitchen and stops. Dain is still upstairs it would seem. Biladoc is standing
defiant in the main room.
The sergeant speaks, "Shut up pip squeak before I step on ya!" He
glances around seeing the kitchen door moving as the others exit he yells,
"You four through the kitchen. " He points to the fifth guard, "Detain this
little man for questioning." He points towards Biladoc.
ALOF
I am going to run to the alley as soon as I hear the guard say
kitchen.
When I get in the alley I'll say guys get ready for a fight we got
company. I'll try and duck behind something and fall into the
shadows. I'll grab two of my daggers and if a fight breaks out I'll
hit the first guard I see.
CARYNTH
I hold my scimitar at the ready to fight, but keep backing away as
swiftly as possible, with the sewers in mind as a place to go.
FRAXEN
I make my way to the sewers with Dain, and I draw my axe and prepare
myself.
DM
Alof darts outside and yells a warning to the rest gathered outside.
Fraxen looks for Dain be realizes that he was upstairs when everyone exited.
Just as he thinks that there is a great clamor as Dain leaps from the second
story window into the alleyway with the rest of the group. He lands and
falls to the side. He is a bit shaken but undamaged. the alley has three
possible exits. Left goes to the Street of Swords, that’s the main street where
the guards and the North Gate are located. Right leads into a more
residential area. And in the Alley is a large sewer grate that seems to have been
pried off. You hear the wounds of something coming towards the grate as you
all draw your weapons.
Meanwhile Bil is still inside, give me an action so I can make the guards move.
BILADOC
I look at the sergeant and say, pointing at him:
'You don't scare me. Even my *Shadow* could *kill* you.'
When Shadow attacks the sergeant, I'll tumble to the backdoor,
pushing the four guards to make them fall and jump over them to join
the party. When outside I'll call Shadow.
HUMPHREY
Humphrey heads to the sewer grate and opens it up motioning for the rest
to jump in. Once all are in he will jump in and try to shut the grate
at the same time.
"Get your butts in the hole."
CARYNTH
Okay. I jump on in!
DM
Biladoc tumbles for the kitchen just as the four guardsmen begin to move
towards it. As such he gets in front of them. Shadow dives at the sergeant and
scratches his face, "GET HIM!" the Sergeant roars as he smacks Shadow. The
hawk squawks loudly as he is knocked to the upper balcony. He quickly regains
wing and flies out a window. Meanwhile, Biladoc comes running out the back door.
You can hear the foot steps of guards behind him.
ALOF
I am going to go to the sewer as fast as possible and then I will hide
in the shadows and cover the people getting in. But if the guards are
coming straight for me I'll climb in as soon as possible. If the grate
doesn't open I stay in the shadows and hit the first guy I see with a
pair of daggers.
DM
Whack the grate with the butt of my staff sling. "Help! We got wounded
people here!" you hear from the sewer grate. Looking you see the dog like face
of Grumach.
You heard something running towards the grate. Now you can see that it is
Grumach. Alof slips into the sewer next to Grumach. He can see he carries a
bloody Ulath (The Dwarven priest), Next to him is a very weakened Serian. And
running down the tunnel towards you is Tarin. He seems to be looking over his
shoulder as he does. Kiya and Kelandil are no where to be seen. You hear
Humphrey yelling for everyone to jump into the sewer.
CARYNTH
I move forward, preparing my healing capacity! (er, spell) moving my
scimitar to my side as I look for the wounded and listen for the guards
behind us!
BILADOC I whistle to call Shadow. When he arrives I'll jump into the sewers, daggers ready to throw at whatever is coming after Tarin. DAIN Dain pries the grate off and goes in axe ready. DM Hunphrey already removed the grate. Dain jumps into the tunnel next to Alof. GRUMACH "Hello, good to meet you all again. We tried attacking the thieves guild. I am sorry I cannot go with you, but I must care for the wounded." Grumach will relax slightly. He will drape one of his cloaks over Serian before climbing out of the sewers, and helping Serian out. I will give Ulath his last rites. If he does something to indicate that he is not dead, I will stop. TARIN Tarin will slow when he comes to the group. "Well, that was not very productive." HUMPHREY Once Humphrey enters the sewers and closes the grate, then speaks, "We are being followed, let's get to the cavern where we all battled the owl bears. Its this way." With that Humphrey heads to the secret door. He will go all the way to the owl bear caverns, unless something occurs that will get his attention. "Let's get these people where we can tend them."
ALOF
I turn and follow Humphrey with daggers drawn just in case
something happens.
TARIN
"Fine." Tarin will follow along at the back of whatever group forms and
watch the back of the party for ambushes.
GRUMACH
Grumach will also follow, carrying the body of Ulath (he won't ditch unless
he absolutely has to, he wants to wait until he can bury it), and helping
Serian walk.
SERIAN
Serian pauses, unclear about a course of action. He waits for Grumach to
decide. The elf concludes he should follow him to safety.
DAIN
"You want to come with us as the city guard are about to pour into this sewer
grate as well." speaks Dain as he motions the rest to move down the sewer
away from where the elves came from. "Go that way, if we are lucky they will
fight each other
GRUMACH
"Then let us move. Thank you for the warning."
HUMPHREY
Humphrey smiles at Dain, "yep that was my plan exactly. The city guard
who are chasing us, should meet up with the thieves guild who are chasing
the rest of you. Which has given us the time, to get through this secret
door."
DM
You all move through the Sewer with Dain and Humphrey leading the way. They
go down several tunnels in the maze like sewers. Grumach helps Serian walk
and Tarin limps behind the group. Soon you reach a solid wall that Dain
examines with his dwarven vision. 'Its here Humphrey." Dain calls out. Soon
he pushes a small ridge in and a secret door opens revealing a small alcove.
You all know that there is a secret door on the left and right wall. The way
to the Owl Bear cave is through the left wall, the Right wall leads into the
priests chambers.
There is no sign from Kelandil and Kiya at this point.
Lets leave everyone in the cave, resting and making plans. That will be the contents of next chapter.
Meanwhile elsewhere in the sewer a form leans against the wall gasping for air. Her lungs burnt from the heat. She stumbled forward until she came to a pool of cool seweage. The smell made her nose scrunch up. SHe slid into the water. THe coolness on her skin felt good as she rested ther listening for a few minutes. The guild would notbe far behind. Checking to look for the others. Hopefully they would think her dead. By all rights she should be she thought.
