After the very successful, but flawed (and they knew it), Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Bob Shaye and New Line asked Wes Craven to get involved with a third Nightmare. Craven and Bruce Wagner put forward a script, but Craven didn't want to direct. Chuck Russell was given his first director's job after he and Frank Darabont put forward a second draft of Craven & Wagner's script.
SYNOPSIS
Kristen Parker (Arquette) lives on Elm Street and has been having nightmares. She sees a house, with girls outside it skipping and singing an unfamiliar nursery rhyme. In the house another little girl makes mention of Freddy (Englund). Now Freddy's after Kristen! She wakes up and goes to the bathroom basin, but the tap comes alive and cuts her wrists. Her mother catches her and thinks that she tried to commit suicide.
The thing is that there has been a bit of an epidemic of teen suicides in the area. Kristen is sent to a Psychiatric Hospital, where some kids who attempted to kill themselves are being put under the care of Dr. Elizabeth Simms (Pointer), Dr. Neil Gordon (Wasson) and the new member of staff, Nancy Thompson (Langenkamp).
All of the kids have "sleep disorders" and are experiencing "group delusions" seeing "the boogey-man" in their dreams. They are dismissed by Dr. Simms as guilt and overt sexuality, Neil doesn't know what the hell is going on, but Nancy believes that Freddy is back!
During one of Kristen's nightmares, she brings in Nancy and they both have the same dream. Nancy feels that this gift and the "dream skills" of the other patients can be used to defeat Freddy.
Meanwhile, Neil has been talking to a Nun who seems to have some kind of insight into the whole business.
It will take the combined effort of all of them to stop Freddy Krueger, put his soul to rest, and keep the last of the Elm Street kids alive!

OVERALL
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is the sequel that #2 should have been. It's strength is that it was based on Wes Craven's script which brought Freddy back to what he can and can't do. It also helps having Heather Langenkamp and John Saxon reprising their roles as it links to the first Nightmare.
Freddy has a motivation in this movie - the remaining Elm Street children have come of age and are ready to be plucked. Robert Englund, once again, puts in a fantastic performance, with Freddy getting a little more of a personality. We also learn a little of Freddy's past.
Chuck Russell did a good job in directing his first motion picture using interesting visuals and story concepts. The rest of the cast are also in excellent form.
Dream Warriors is by far the best Nightmare on Elm Street sequel (barring New Nightmare which is not technically a sequel to the series). Featuring the now immortal ad-libbed line, "Welcome to Prime Time, bitch!", it is definitely worth a look.
