ANWYL "Postmortem Apocalypse" (Drakkar Productions) 37:24min
The US underground Black and Death Metal scene is raging at the moment has been proved by the latest releases by BLACK WITCHERY, GRAND BELIAL’s KEY, THORNSPAWN or WIND OF THE BLACK MOUNTAINS, just to name a few. Now ANWYL - a malicious Black / Death / Thrash three-piece heading from Hutchinson, Kansas – add their debut CD / LP “Postmortem Apocalypse” to those other great offerings. A killer production, lots of brutal and driving Thrash & Death Metal riffs, relentless blasting drums (good job, Mikai!) and a vocalist screaming in totally hateful aggression make ANWYL’s first release a remarkable sonic onslaught!!! My personal faves are ‘Ordeal By Corpse’, ‘Of Faust And Fury’, which arouses parallels to cult Deathers ANGEL CORPSE, although ANWYL are a bit more Thrash influenced, and the unusual but awesome ENTOMBED Cover ‘Supposed To Rot’, which might be interpreted as a statement for the uniting of underground Black and Death Metal in one powerful force. So if you like a well-produced, highly aggressive, misanthropic Black / Death / Thrash mixture be sure to check out this strong and talented new band – the name is ANWYL, the album is called “Postmortem Apocalypse” and it is fucking intense!!! Try to get the LP version, because it contains a cool cover of SODOM’s ‘Persecution Mania’ as bonus. ANWYL “Postmortem Apocalypse” advance
(Drakkar Productions/2002)
Rating: 20/10
This is it. This is where it all ends. With their scorching debut full-length, “Postmortem Apocalypse”, ANWYL have boldly declared war on the entire underground, and if you have an ounce of self preservation you will join their fight as I have. This release is a landmark in extreme music, at times calling upon the grand masters of old (Voivod, Necrovore, and Possessed in particular); this is the absolute pinnacle of thrash. While staying absolutely true to their death/black metal roots, ANWYL has accomplished the impossible; an album that takes me right back to what drew me to thrash metal in the early 80’s in the first place, but is still so thoroughly modern and exciting that it demands to be recognized as an instant classic along the lines of “Reign In Blood,” “Pleasure to Kill,” and “Scream Bloody Gore”.Bassist Blaspheroth has evolved into an absolutely phenomenal screecher, to the point where I’m left wondering to myself, “Olc who?” It seems unfathomable that he wasn’t their front-man before this. His performance is simply catastrophic in proportion. Krom’s guitar work, while still retaining the unpredictability from the band’s “Bloody Mary” release, has become more focused and sharpened to a bloody, jagged edge. The riffs this motherfucker churns out are fucking HUGE! And Mikai’s drumming is once again a jaw-dropper. If you live to be a thousand years old you will never hear a more awe-inspiring drummer, I kid you not. My only worry at this point is Mikai’s decision to switch over to second guitar after Olc’s departure. While I’m sure he will prove to be an accomplished axe-man, his drumming, I’m afraid, will be desperately missed. I do not envy the poor soul who has to follow him on the drum throne: Mighty big shoes to fill, indeed. Add all this up (plus a special bonus track only available on the limited vinyl version) and you’ve got the fucking amazing “Postmortem Apocalypse”. I swore I would never “cheese-out” and grant a release more than the allotted 10 points, but there had to be a dividing line between the Lion and his Pride; or more accurately, the Wolf and the Sheep. If you don’t find a way to get your hands on at least ten copies of this guaranteed metal classic, then go fucking kill yourself now, because you are a worthless piece of maggot encrusted grandma shit. I swear to everything that I believe in that this is the most phenomenal release I have heard in at least the last 10 years.

Anwyl-Postmortem Apocalypse(Drakkar Productions 2003)-10 inverted crosses
When you think of Kansas, you think of Dorothy and Toto..well,welcome to 2003,where Toto has long since been mutilated for chinese food, and Dorothy is slowly and painfully dying of AIDS...all courtesy of the plague metal provided by the almighty Anwyl!!!! This band hails from Kansas(the last place that you think good black or death metal would come from due to its bible belt background)and will be the band that will ultimately put an end to that state!!! This album comes straight out blasting at you from all sides, from the first track to the last is nothing short of pure perfection,a lot of killer elements are present on this album-you got the killer old school death/thrash riffing of Krom, the blasting of Mikai on the battery, and Blaspheroth with thundering bass lines and vocals similar to Tom Angelripper-what more could you want??? How about covers of Entombed's "Supposed To Rot" and Sodom's "Persecution Mania"???(the Sodom cover will be on the vinyl version only) Songs to really listen to here are:"Of Faust And Fury","Consuming The Carrion","Ravenous Purity Of Warring Death",hell, all of them!!!! Blast this album at your next gathering of maniacs and spread their plague metal, because I sure will!!!!!

Anwyl'Postmortem Apocalypse'
(Promo cd-Drakkar Pro. 2003)
This promo cd-includes three bludgeoning black metal tunez. Anwyl seems to have been very busy as of late, they began work on their 2nd lp for Drakkar Pro. they have a deal underway with Agonia Recs. (Pol.) to release their second 7" vinyl EP for late 2003. I have only but a taste of what lies within that of the 'Postmortem Apocalypse' release & it's awesome black metal-I especially liked, 'Ordeal by Corpse'. Keep up the killer work guyz!--SkullCrusher/Angela MetalAttack Airplay/Zine

Anwyl-Postmortem Apocalypse
Drakkar Productions 2003 Tracks: 7 34:05 -Reviewed by Mercury

Really not our cup of tea. I think, despite the vocals, everything about this would make one have to second guess calling this a black metal release. It's full of riffs of all sorts, thrash, speed metal, death metal. Its half an hour of fretboard dancing. Thrash and death metal fans could possibly be purchasing their album of the year when they pick this one up. But for those on a strict diet of metal that is black with elements of nothing else, don't expect another Hail Mary.
Comments: Very talented, very tight, sounding absolutely perfect for this style. Blazing the trails of death metal technicality. Will put Anwyl on the map for good.
Comparisons: Death meets 80's thrash.
Complaints: In the entire metal genre, one of 2 ingredients is essential. Brutality, or atmosphere. The production is crystal clear and the knee-jerk reaction of the music leaves no room for atmosphere. For an album so technical, they left out the essential ingredient of brutality. This sounds about as brutal as baking cookies. Sometimes they change the song up so many times that it becomes downright annoying, and one cant wonder if they are simply trying to show-off their talent (which they obviously have incredible amounts of).
