Pownal Vermont - May 2000

Once upon a time, there were 4 seperate departments that covered the town of Pownal,... there was Pownal Center, East Pownal, North Pownal, and Pownal. At one point (and to be truthful, I dont know when, but within the last 20 years) that changed. Pownal remained Pownal, Headquartes, Company 1. The rest of the stations merged into Pownal Valley Fire Dept. They have the center station (on Rte 7), East Pownal on South Stream Road, and North Pownal, which is on Rte 436 in North Pownal. They mainly run out of the center station, but they have a truck in North Pownal, and I think 3 or 4 guys from there, and I dont know for sure if there is any equipment at East.

We are Pownal Headquartere Company 1. We have an old station, which we rent to the rescue quad, and a new station that we built ourselves, they are within sight of each other on Rte 346 and Depot St on South Pownal. To be honest, I dont know why they merged, I think politics and not enough men to run 4 different departments. Pownal is a very small town, but we hold our own very well. My station is known for being very aggressive in attacks on fire. We have 6 trucks,,, a 1999 3,000 gallon E-One, a 197something 1,000 gallon Mack, a 1994 1,500 gallon E-One, a heavy resuce truck (Ford F350) a brush truck (state surplus something or other, by the time it gets there they can help roll hose) and a reel truck with a HUGE pump on the front. We are 95% self funded through a weekly BINGO .... what fun that is.,.. and a small donation from the town. Valley is town funded.

Could you tell me if Pownal has 4 fire stations? I was just looking at the Vermont Atlas and I see 3 villages and a large eastern area in Pownal. Are there basically 1 fire station in each village and then 1 station to cover the larger area on the east side of Town? Just wondering - I like to collect fire info from all over the place - and I have never been quite able to totally nail down how the fire protection system in Pownal is set up. Take care - Peter S
