SENGKANG FIRE STATION

$14m state-of-the-art facility can house 700

THE Sengkang Fire Station, Singapore's newest and biggest, is ready for action. Aside from being the largest, covering 7,000 sq m, the $14-million state-of-the-art facility boasts a few other firsts for the Singapore Civil Defence Force. It is home to the first Immediate Response Centre - which brings together a medical company and a rescue battalion under one roof, with all their specialised equipment. The station in Buangkok Drive is one of 14 here. It has the capacity for 700 fire-fighters and rescue personnel.

In a bid to be environment-friendly, a water conservation system has been installed to re-use water that is sprayed during fire-fighting training. Water hitting a wall is collected in drains and recycled for use in washing or other training purposes. The station is also equipped with special tools and machines like de-contamination pods to deal with chemical fires and spillage.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the station yesterday, Associate Professor Chin Tet Yung said suchcapabilitiesenable the station to deal with any large-scale emergency and crisis. Prof Chin, the Government Parliamentary Committee chairman for Law and Home Affairs and an MP for Sembawang GRC, added that the station would also be an asset to the residents in the area. 'This place is now assured of a fast and efficient service from emergency personnel, should there be any fire, rescue or ambulance call.' Copyright @ 2000 Singapore Press Holdings.
