Fire tender throws water on airport status

TIMES NEWS NETWORK - November 24, 2001

HYDERABAD: A fire tender which got stranded right in the middle of the runway at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Thursday gave the airport staff anxious moments. A flight preparing to land was diverted to Chennai because the fire tender was in way on the runway. According to airport officials, it took 25 minutes to release the pneumatic brakes of the vehicle before it was moved out. Airport Director B K Srivastava told The Times of India that such a mechanical failure has occurred for the first time at the airport. "We have taken care to ensure that it does not happen again,'' he said. The fire tender got jammed despite regular fire exercises being undertaken. The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) was upgraded to category eight of the fire services in July when the A330 Airbus of the Malaysian and Emirates Airlines began operations from the city. With the upgradation of the airport, security and emergency services have also been overhauled. The airport now has three fire tenders and three ambulances, in accordance with the rules of the International Aviation Organisation. These rules are formed keeping in mind the type of aircraft and the number of aircraft operating from the airport. The fire tenders are parked near the middle of the runway from where, in case of an emergency, the fire tenders can reach the spot of accident within three minutes — the stipulated response time. The fire station is in contact with the control tower 24 hours a day. The fire services also conduct regular fire drills and checkups of vehicles. A hot fire-drill, where a fire is started and the airport fire services put it out, is carried out once a month. Routine classes and other drills are carried out everyday.

BEML exploring markets for its fire tenders

ANANTHA KRISHNAN M

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

BANGALORE: The Bharat Earth Movers is exploring the possibilities of exporting its state-of-the-art crash fire tenders.

BEML chairman and managing director K. Aprameyan told The Times of India, these fire tenders are the best bet during accidents in and around airports, refineries and other sensitive establishments.

"We expect further orders from the Indian Air Force and the possibility of their export to the countries in the Middle-East, Africa and South-East Asia are being worked on," Aprameyan said.

BEML has so far delivered 18 CFTs to the IAF, which have been deployed at various airports and airbases in the country. The IAF acquired these fire tenders in two phases.

The response to the CFTs is said to be satisfactory, considering the swiftness of these the machine in dealing with exigencies that may arise on board the aircraft during a crash.

The machine: The super structure of the CFT is built on a Tatra 815 VVN 20 235 6X6 chassis and is powered by an air-cooled engine up-rated to 360 hp.

The vehicle speeds from zero to 80 kmph within 40 seconds and is capable of hitting a maximum speed of 100 kmph so as to reach an accident spot as fast as possible.

The chassis of the CFT is designed to provide good mobility not only on paved surface but also on cross-country terrain.

The vehicle is based on a unique design of swinging half axles attached to power line housed in backbone tube. This enables the vehicle to travel cross-country and negotiate obstacles, protecting the driver from being subject to shocks and articulations.

The structure consists of a water tank of 6,500 litre capacity with the necessary fittings and a foam tank of 800 litre capacity. A mid-ship centrifugal pump driven by the vehicle delivers water under very high pressure.

An automatic foam proportioning and induction system is provided where the preset induction ratio of foam compounds or water solution is maintained. A foam monitor is provided on the roof of the cabin for directing the spray towards the fire.

Apart from the fire tender, the BEML also supplies a series of trucks from the Tatra range to the Indian Army for various forward operations.
