Police scare as radios go out during Gore rally November 7, 2000,

Here's a nightmare for you. It's your job to keep crowds under control in downtown Nashville on this busy election night and protect Al Gore and Joseph Lieberman's motorcade as they move through the city.

But your police officers have no radio communication. That happened Tuesday night in Nashville.

Metro's brand-new radio system went on the fritz. It happened just before War Memorial Plaza was to be opened to the public. Patrol officers were out of radio contact and some of them didn't even know it. The Fire Department and ambulance systems were out briefly, too. At the Fire Department's mobile command center, Battalion Chief Jim Wilson said no one was sure exactly what happened. The radio channels were bleeding over each other. Wilson said, "I don't think we were out altogether for no more than about 30 minutes. They roughly got it back up in about 30 minutes."

The system was slowly coming back on-line by about 7:30pm, much to the relief of the police and fire departments. It couldn't have happened on a worse night with the Vice President expected at the plaza.

Rural/Metro Corporation Wins New FedEx Airport Fire Contract; Company Also Secures New 911 Contract Term in Orange County, Florida
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 2000--Rural/Metro Corporation (Nasdaq:RURL) announced today that it has entered into a new three-year contract with Federal Express Corporation to provide aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) services at the FedEx Express hub in Memphis, Tennessee. Rural/Metro won the contract through a competitive bidding process.
"We are very pleased that FedEx Express once again has chosen Rural/Metro to provide this vital fire safety and protection service," said Jack Brucker, president and chief executive officer. "Rural/Metro has demonstrated to FedEx -- through outstanding performance over the last five years -- that we deliver the highest quality aircraft rescue and fire fighting services available. We value our association with FedEx and look forward to building upon that relationship in the future."
FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., connects areas that generate 90 percent of the world's gross domestic product in 24 to 48 hours with door-to-door, customs-cleared service and a money-back guarantee. The corporation's worldwide headquarters is in Memphis, where its airport hub accommodates more than 200 flights daily. Rural/Metro has been the aircraft rescue and fire fighting provider since 1995, when it was awarded its first five-year contract.
Rural/Metro's on-site firefighter-EMTs provide a full complement of ARFF services to the FedEx hub, including site safety and runway inspections. Additionally, at the request of FedEx, Rural/Metro has implemented a three-shift staffing schedule designed to further improve service to the customer.
Jack Foraker, FedEx contract administrator, said, "We are very pleased
with the hard work and dedication of the Rural/Metro team. They consistently deliver timely and accurate service, and they maintain a commitment to doing things right, and that's very important to us."
Foraker continued, "We have one of the largest concentrations of aircraft anywhere in the world, and in the fast, time-definite environment that FedEx works in, safety, reliability and efficiency are very important. We know we can depend on Rural/Metro to be part of our team."
In other business developments, Rural/Metro has won unanimous approval
from the Orange County (Florida) Commission to enter into a new, three-year contract to provide emergency transportation services in the county. The contract provides for a two-year term, with a one-year optional extension. Rural/Metro has entered formal contract negotiations with the county to determine system structure and pricing details.
Brucker commented, "We are very pleased by the Commission's support
of
Rural/Metro as the provider of choice for the citizens of Orange County. We have a long-standing reputation for delivering excellent care, and I'm proud that we will continue to build on our strength as a leading regional provider in a growing and dynamic marketplace. We look forward to completing our contract negotiations in the next few weeks and will announce further details at that time."
Rural/Metro has been the 911 provider in Orange County since 1985, responding to more than 48,000 calls for service annually. In addition, the Company provides non-emergency general ambulance transportation services to a host of hospitals, long-term care facilities and other healthcare clients throughout the greater Orlando area. Rural/Metro is Florida's only ambulance provider to be accredited by the national Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services.
Rural/Metro Corporation provides mobile health services, including emergency and non-emergency ambulance transportation, fire protection and other safety-related services to municipal, residential, commercial and industrial customers in more than 400 communities throughout the United States and Latin America.
