However, many of the on-board units are not functioning and according to people in the comm center, the overall system is not working all that great. Problems identified were software incompatibility and basically an outdated system. I don't even see much in the trade magazines from this company any more so I don't know if they are even offering this product any more. Cruisers of the Internet will sometime see maps with the ETAK copyright mark on it. I assume they did have a large database of digital maps that they may still be marketing. Look closely at Sunstar units and you will note a new antenna sprouting up on the roof of the cab, a cellular-like gain antenna. These units are pilot testing a new vehicle reporting system although I to not know the details of it, or its capability to report vehicle locations. I think they have been bought by Sony, but they still use the Etak corporate name. I toured the SunStar facility about five years ago; if today's in-vehicle units are still the ones that they had then, they are certainly not the current AVL technology. I'd expect to see a lot more of the Etak name as all of us start getting AVL and other in-vehicle guidance systems in our vehicles. They used to be used a lot. I think that they now have more physicians available then in the Joe Ryan days. When the MODs are on there is always still an MD on call if needed-just not immediately available for every ambulance medical control call. ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ Message: 16    Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 17:12:33 EDT    From: gjmead@aol.com Subject: Re: Re: MCO? This is the person who patches the ambulance calls on the UHF Medcom channels through to the hospitals using the microwave links. They are also responsible for hailing the Medical Doctor on call and connecting them to the various ALS units when a "consult" is requested by the crew or required by protocol. The MCO operates a separate console over in the corner at the Sunstar dispatch center. These individuals are frequently moonlighting firefighters or other individuals from within the system. They are not required to be Paramedics as they serve basically a "switchboard operator" function. (Sunstar dispatchers on the 800 system are all required to be Paramedics with additional training as medical dispatchers, CPR instructors, and lots of street time. This is where a lot of the very Sr. Medics go when they get tired of working regularly on the street.) --------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Message: 21    Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 22:27:12 -0400    From: "trunktracker" Subject: Re: MCO? Yes. The MCO identifier causes MCO to be paged with the incident information. The reason why it "goes away shortly after dispatch" is because the tac channel operator immediately places MCO available after the call is dispatched. Once that digital page has gone out, there's no reason to leave the MCO identifier on the call. trunktracker@sprynet.com Here is another one. MCO goes away shortly after dispatch, must be some type of pager. 19:01:12 695A 1D 5405 SHORE BL S WATER RESCUE (NEED MARINE) E17 R17 M11 SPPDM MCO 458 -Tom -------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
